Brain Computation Is Organized via Power-of-Two-Based Permutation Logic

There is considerable scientific interest in understanding how cell assemblies--the long-presumed computational motif--are organized so that the brain can generate intelligent cognition and flexible behavior. The Theory of Connectivity proposes that the origin of intelligence is rooted in a power-of-two-based permutation logic (N 2i–1), producing specific-to-general cell-assembly architecture capable of generating specific perceptions and memories, as well as generalized knowledge and flexible actions. We show that this power-of-two-based permutation logic is widely used in cortical and subcortical circuits across animal species and is conserved for the processing of a variety of cognitive modalities including appetitive, emotional and social information. Interestingly, this specific-to-general permutation logic remained largely intact although NMDA receptors--the synaptic switch for learning and memory--were deleted throughout adulthood, suggesting that the logic is developmentally pre-configured. Moreover, this computational logic is implemented in the cortex via combining a random-connectivity strategy in superficial layers 2/3 with nonrandom organizations in deep layers 5/6. This randomness of layers 2/3 cliques--which preferentially encode specific and low-combinatorial features and project inter-cortically--is ideal for maximizing cross-modality novel pattern-extraction, pattern-discrimination and pattern-categorization using sparse code, consequently explaining why it requires hippocampal offline-consolidation.

Intel to provide computing power for Delphi's autonomous cars

Auto parts and electronics maker Delphi Corp. has signed a deal with Intel to buy high-powered computer processors for Delphi's future autonomous vehicle systems. Delphi says Intel's added computing capacity will be needed as autonomous car systems gather and store more and more information while expanding their ability to deal with situations on real roads. In August, Delphi announced that it had joined with Israeli software maker Mobileye to develop the building blocks for a fully autonomous car in about two years. Intel Corp. will supply Delphi with high-capacity computers needed to process input from radar, cameras and laser sensors as well as maps of roadside landmarks. Glen De Vos, vice president of Delphi's business-services unit, says the Intel deal gives the company everything it needs to develop an autonomous-driving package to sell to automakers. Delphi makes its own radar and laser sensors and uses Mobileye's cameras and software.

Incase you missed it, here are the prequels to this article about the Mobile Vision API. The first post was on the Face Detection API while the second was on the Barcode Detection API. According to the overview, the Text Detection API allows for detecting text in images and videos and it breaks down those texts into blocks (paragraphs/columns), lines (sets of words on the same vertical axis) and words (set of alphanumeric characters on the same vertical axis). The API recognizes text in various Latin based languages. I'll write about what's possible with this API before I go ahead to explain how to use it .


Convict-spotting algorithm criticised - BBC News

An experiment to see whether computers can identify criminals based on their faces has been conducted in China. Researchers trained an algorithm using more than 1,500 photos of Chinese citizens, hundreds of them convicts. They said the program was then able to correctly identify criminals in further photos 89% of the time. But the research, which has not been peer reviewed, has been criticised by criminology experts who say the AI may reflect bias in the justice system. "This article is not looking at people's behaviour, it is looking at criminal conviction," said Prof Susan McVie, professor of quantitative criminology at the University of Edinburgh.


Startup Wizer releases AI-based marketing survey platform

The platform parses various business reports and other sources to assemble background information in specific industry verticals, like ready meals or food/beverages. Currently, the focus is on consumer packaged goods (CPG) and retailers, although new categories can be built. Marketers define goals, then answer a series of questions. The platform pulls appropriate questions from hundreds pre-written by human researchers, and the questions are auto-assembled, without any writing by the marketer, into an online questionnaire of 25–30 questions. The platform learns about a specific business from the questionnaire's results and feedback from the business. The questionnaire is then made available to an online panel of paid respondents via the UK-based firm Lucid.


Sky Mobile launches, hoping to fix everything wrong with phone contracts

Sky has launched a new mobile network that it hopes can fix the problems with all the existing ones. The new carrier, known as Sky Mobile, is intended to be the UK's "most flexible mobile service". It's looking to do so by including new features, perhaps the biggest of which is letting people roll over their unused data so that tehy can use it when they want. The other headline features of the network – which the company is calling a smart network for smart devices – include tariffs that let people only pay for the data they use and letting people change how much data is in their plan each month. In its facilities, JAXA develop satellites and analyse their observation data, train astronauts for utilization in the Japanese Experiment Module'Kibo' of the International Space Station (ISS) and develop launch vehicles 32/39 The robot developed by Seed Solutions sings and dances to the music during the Japan Robot Week 2016 at Tokyo Big Sight.
