International Business Machines launched Watson solutions for enterprise in 2014. Google, as a search engine as well as a company, has come a tremendously long way since the days of a simple web page and a list of links. Nowadays, there's little that we don't think Google is possible of, and with their recent approach to Artificial Intelligence, the company's historic motto of "don't be evil" could be helping the whole human race in the near future. Google's AI research has focused on training these algorithms to make decisions for themselves, and speed up the process exponentially. The firm has already been training their AI to improve the quality of smaller images when enlarged, but the Google Research Blog is sharing something much more important with us this week, the idea of using AI to catch Diabetic Blindness sooner, rather than later. Diabetes is a serious condition, and while many will know about the dangers surrounding the need to amputate a foot because of the disease, few will be familiar with Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a disease which puts as many as 415 Million diabetic patients at risk of blindness all over the world.
Japan's top cancer research institute to use AI for treating, diagnosing disease
Japan's major cancer research institution has announced plans to use artificial intelligence to diagnose cancer and decide the best courses of treatment for patients. The National Cancer Center said Tuesday that it will work with other organizations, including the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, to make a system for cancer diagnosis and treatment for trial use within five years. The system will use a database created from massive amounts of data accumulated by the center that includes genetic information and results of blood tests and diagnostic imaging, and also check relevant medical research papers, it said. The center plans to use the system for finding new markers in detecting cancer at an early stage and developing drugs to fight the disease. Similar moves to utilize AI in the medical field are already underway at various institutions nationwide.

"We're seeing a continued excitement for interacting with AI products, like chatbots, through the heavy holiday promotion of tech products with built-in AI, like Amazon's Echo and Alexa and Google's new Home," said Andrew Seay, director of mobile experience at Vibes. But as for exactly how chatbots played a role in the shopping experience and number of sales, experts say it's only up from here. "Chatbots will be giving Santa some help this holiday season for a few boys and girls on the digital nice list, but they are unlikely to give retailers the needle-moving sales boost they're looking for," said Jake Bennett, CTO at POP. "Chatbots are just too new, and there are too many logistical hurdles for widespread adoption in 2016." Bennett said that, on the one hand, chatbots provide an ideal platform for an interactive holiday gift guide -- quite literally guiding customers to certain products.

He'd gone into a coma after suffering a stroke, and she wondered what the latest recommendations said--whether playing music to him in his native language could keep him connected to this world, or if giving him Prozac could boost his chances of recovery as it had done for mice in a study last year. A company named Iris launched a first version of that type of assistant. The machine can currently read the abstract of a paper, map out its key concepts, and find papers relevant to those concepts. It provides a quick way to get a sense of the scientific landscape for a given topic, something especially useful when you don't know the exact keywords for the type of research you are looking for.
