They recommend favorable items like books, movies, and search queries to users based on their past preferences. Applying similar ideas and techniques to Monte Carlo simulations of physical systems boosts their e fficiency without sacrificing accuracy. Exploiting the quantum to classical mapping inherent in the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo methods, we construct a classical molecular gas model to reproduce the quantum distributions. We then utilize powerful molecular simulation techniques to propose e fficient quantum Monte Carlo updates. The recommender engine approach provides a general way to speed up the quantum impurity solvers. At the heart of every quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method is a quantum to classical mapping.

Uber will start up its own AI research lab - Roadshow
Uber's ride-hailing service is set to get smarter. The company announced on Monday that it bought New York-based AI start-up Geometric Intelligence and will soon launch its own AI research lab, creatively named Uber AI Labs. Geometric Intelligence's 15 specialists in machine learning will help drive Uber's research in self-driving cars (confirmed by Geometric Intelligence CEO Gary Marcus to the The Wall Street Journal). Autonomous vehicles are a hot research area for the automotive industry right now, and Uber is keen to make its mark on the cutting-edge technology, along with carmakers like BMW and technology titans like Google. While Uber's own fleet of self-driving cars tool around San Francisco (I've seen them), pick up passengers in Pittsburgh and go on the occasional beer run, it needs to do much more to not be left behind in the dust. In addition to machine learning, Uber can also use AI to help calculate the most efficient route, better match carpool riders and more accurately tell customers when their car will arrive, chief product officer Jeff Holden wrote in Uber's blog post announcement.

Volkswagen is preparing for an era when cars won't need drivers. The company announced Monday the launch of a spinoff company named Moia that will focus primarily on autonomous vehicles. Moia, which will be based in Berlin, was introduced on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt in London and will aim to embrace "mobility solutions." That means, it's essentially working on various transportation concepts that won't require car ownership--or in many cases, won't require a human driver. The move follows the footsteps of automotive companies like Ford and General Motors, which have launched a variety of pilot programs and partnered with ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft to expand their presence.

Could internet searches identify dodgy drugs? A Microsoft researcher has trained an algorithm to predict whether a drug will be recalled, using queries made through Microsoft's Bing search engine. "We know that every once in a while there will be a batch of a pharmaceutical drug that will have something wrong about it," says Elad Yom-Tov at Microsoft Research in Israel. "People will start asking about that drug more often or more than they usually do." Pharmaceutical companies and regulators such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) monitor drugs on the market to keep tabs on adverse effects and potential faulty batches.
Amazon Go launches, letting people walk into shops and take things from the shelves
Amazon has launched a real-life shop where people can just pick things up and leave. Amazon Go, as it is calling the shop, uses a range of technologies to watch over people and see what they take from the shop. When they leave – which is done simply by walking back out the door – they'll be charged through their Amazon account for everything that they've picked up. To shop at the store, people just sign in at the door with their Amazon app, by pressing their phone against a sensor. That signs them in – and then everything else is done automatically.
