Quantum Monte Carlo simulation of a particular class of non-stoquastic Hamiltonians in quantum annealing
Quantum annealing is a generic solver of the optimization problem that uses fictitious quantum fluctuation. Its simulation in classical computing is often performed using the quantum Monte Carlo simulation via the Suzuki--Trotter decomposition. However, the negative sign problem sometimes emerges in the simulation of quantum annealing with an elaborate driver Hamiltonian, since it belongs to a class of non-stoquastic Hamiltonians. In the present study, we propose an alternative way to avoid the negative sign problem involved in a particular class of the non-stoquastic Hamiltonians. To check the validity of the method, we demonstrate our method by applying it to a simple problem that includes the anti-ferromagnetic XX interaction, which is a typical instance of the non-stoquastic Hamiltonians.
Unmanned JAXA spaceship arrives with supplies, Christmas gifts at ISS
CANAVERAL FLORIDA – Japan's unmanned cargo spaceship loaded with supplies docked at the International Space Station at an altitude of about 400 km early Wednesday, the country's space agency said. Japan time after astronauts at the ISS caught the cargo transporter with a robotic arm. An H-IIB rocket carrying the cargo spaceship blasted off from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture on Friday. After the launch, the Kounotori6 was controlled by the Tsukuba Space Center of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency in Ibaraki Prefecture, JAXA said. The cargo spaceship was carrying 5.9 tons of supplies including food, drinking water and other daily necessities for astronauts aboard the ISS, seven ultrasmall satellites developed by some universities and firms, and Japanese-made lithium-ion batteries for use on the space station, according to JAXA.
Israeli VC Pitango launches its 7th early-stage fund of $175M
Pitango Venture Capital, one of the most active VCs in the Israeli startup scene, has announced its seventh fund, Pitango Venture Capital 7. The fund will have $175 million under management, and invest from seed upwards. The new fund focuses on IT and life science investments, specializing in enterprise infrastructure, IoT, artificial intelligence and digital health. The new fund joins Pitango's first Growth Fund, which focuses on late-stage companies and which came out last year. This latest move brings Pitango's recent capital raising to a total of $400 million in both funds, taking its total assets under management to $2 billion. Pitango Venture Capital 7's first investment is in Graphcore, a developer and manufacturer of an intelligent processing unit for machine learning, as part of a $32 million investment round, with Bosch VC, Foundation Capital, Amadeus Capital Partners, Samsung's investment arm and other leading technology companies.

Microsoft formally introduces Zo, its latest AI-powered chatbot
Microsoft is surging forward with its commitment to artificial intelligence (AI), formally announcing its latest chatbot, Zo. In a post outlining its commitment to AI, Microsoft introduced Zo as the next chapter in the evolution of its attempts to create a social chatbot. Zo is built on the back of the same technology that powers Microsoft's other chatbots in China and Japan, Xiaoice and Rinna. Zo is meant to learn from her interactions with humans, and is able to respond to conversations with her own personality. In a nod to an awkward turn of events involving Microsoft's last attempt at a social chatbot, Tay, the company notes that Zo has guards in place to prevent exploitation.

The year Jojo and I started eighth grade, the power plant officially cut electricity to two hours a day. We'd already been through years of brownouts, of flickering lights, blinking monitors, older ag drones without artificial neural networks rebooting in their stations and randomly launching to spray the fields again or overfeed the chickens. So when Public Works & Electric issued a message to all our devices telling us about its irregular hours of operation, no one was surprised. Anyone driving down the causeway to the airport, past the power plant, could see through its chain-link fence the turbines standing silent, tense as raised shoulders; the grounds swamped in seawater, the ebbing tide dragging out an iridescent Rorschach of petroleum.
