This article is a part of an evolving theme. Here, I explain the basics of Deep Learning and how Deep learning algorithms could apply to IoT and Smart city domains. Specifically, as I discuss below, I am interested in complementing Deep learning algorithms using IoT datasets. I elaborate these ideas in the Data Science for Internet of Things program which enables you to work towards being a Data Scientist for the Internet of Things (modelled on the course I teach at Oxford University and UPM – Madrid).

When you throw an event hoping to draw 400 people but an audience of 29,000 shows up, do you think it's a good sign indicating you're onto something? That incredible interest is what happened in Beijing the week of 28 November 2016 at the International Summit on Machine Learning and Industry Application. The event's 20 speakers gathered from across industries and academia to offer their insights about machine learning trends and new directions. For the keynote address, Dinesh Nirmal, vice president, analytics development, at IBM, teamed up with Kent Ting, vice president, IBM Analytics Global Consulting Group, at IBM. Nirmal and Ting talked about the IBM focus on machine learning and the company's efforts to enable developers in China and elsewhere. Of particular interest to the audience was their demo of IBM Watson Machine Learning, a full-service IBM Bluemix platform offering.

"When it comes to A.I., we may be worried about the wrong things," says Amy Webb, a forecaster of digital trends and author of "The Signals Are Talking." Rather than the cliche of artificial intelligence that goes to war against humanity, Webb says we might worry about A.I. that too accurately mimics humanity. As artificial intelligence continues to develop, Webb, the founder of the Future Today Institute and an adjunct professor at NYU, says her greatest concern is that A.I. is created by humans, and so reflects back our own beliefs, values, and biases. She offers as an example Tay, an A.I.-powered chatbot released on Twitter earlier this year. It only took 24 hours for Tay to start posting racist and xenophobic messages all across the internet.

The social media company has been embroiled in a number of content moderation controversies this year, from facing international outcry after removing an iconic Vietnam War photo due to nudity, to allowing the spread of fake news on its site. Facebook has historically relied mostly on users to report offensive posts, which are then checked by Facebook employees against company "community standards." Decisions on especially thorny content issues that might require policy changes are made by top executives at the company. Candela told reporters that Facebook increasingly was using artificial intelligence to find offensive material. It is "an algorithm that detects nudity, violence, or any of the things that are not according to our policies," he said.

I think there are three things that are going to affect the world in incredibly significant ways over the next decade and they are 1) Climate change 2) CRISPR and 3) artificial intelligence. NIPS is probably the single largest AI conference in the field and it's happening in Barcelona right now. A recent report on artificial intelligence published by MarketsandMarkets said that the overall artificial intelligence market is expected to be worth $16.06 billion by 2022, growing at a CAGR of 62.9 percent from 2016 to 2022. Simi – Your Personal Bartender chatbot will offer over 200o DIY cocktail recipes which can be made with ingredients like juices, mint, lime, cola etc. and mixed with USL – Diageo's brands like Black Dog Whisky, Black & White Whisky, Johnnie Walker Whisky, Smirnoff Vodka, Tanqueray Gin and Captain Morgan Rum among others. The chatbot is expected to gain intelligence through conversations and will start by offering bartending recommendations based on combination of ingredients and alcohol preference.

This is computer-generated wordplay and an example of how the boundaries of artificial intelligence are shifting. If a computer can crack jokes, what other human activities could they start to replicate? What jobs could it take? Artificial intelligence has become an increasingly big issue for education - not least because many tech companies and publishers are circling around the huge commercial opportunities. But could students really get their answers from a robot rather than a teacher?

WASHINGTON – A coalition drone strike in Syria killed three Islamic State group leaders involved in plotting foreign attacks, including two men who helped facilitate last year's attacks in Paris, the Pentagon said Tuesday. "The three were working together to plot and facilitate attacks against Western targets at the time of the strike," Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said in a statement. They were killed in a Dec. 4 airstrike in Raqqa, an IS group stronghold in Syria. Two of those killed -- Salah-Eddine Gourmat and Sammy Djedou -- were involved in facilitating the Nov. 13, 2015, Paris attacks, in which 130 people died, Cook said. Gourmat was a French national and Djedou, Belgian.

While Microsoft is preparing for the release of Windows 10 IoT Core for a multitude of devices, the Redmond giant is also quietly pushing for the availability of Cortana in all the devices that the Windows 10 software variant will be supporting. This is based on the information Microsoft officials provided last week at WinHEC 2016 in Shenzhen that has come to light early this week. In a presentation, entitled "Cortana and the Speech Platform," Microsoft officials revealed to OEM partners what the company's big move for its advanced voice assistant is all about. ZDNet has learned that the tech giant is preparing for its PCs and device partners to utilize the "Wake on Voice from Modern Standby" and "Far-field Voice" functionality of Cortana through the Creators Update that is arriving in Spring 2017. The "Wake on Voice from Modern Standby" technology enables Cortana to control devices from their inactive state.
