Palantir CEO Alex Karp Says Going Public Is'A Possibility' Big data is ubiquitous because it can provide valuable insight that is unavailable without it. Analyzing big data sets can pose problems, however. For starters, big data is big, sometimes too big to be handled effectively by commonly used analysis tools. Researchers at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and the University of Haifa in Israel have developed a solution to this problem that turns big data into manageable data. Data analysis tools such as low-rank approximation, singular-value decomposition, principal-component analysis, and nonnegative matrix factorization are commonly used to reduce the number of variables in a dataset.

Facebook has borrowed Snapchat's biggest and most famous picture. The company has now built a special camera feature into its Messenger app, and added other visual tools meant to make it easier to send pictures to friends. As well as allowing easy access to the camera, the new Messenger includes animations and special effects that can be laid over the top of pictures. On October 27, 2016 Artificial Lawyer published a guest article by Dutch lawyer Niek van de Pasch on the quickly growing legal tech scene in Holland. It was a very interesting read, but it only added to my growing sense of unease, a feeling that started upon my discovery of Dutch Legal Tech in February 2016. I have been interested in all things tech for a very long time.

Researchers in Japan are using a state-of-the-art technique to read and then amplify self-confidence in study participants. Dr. Mitsuo Kawato, director of the Computational Neuroscience Laboratories at the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International in Kyoto, Japan, has pioneered the process called "Decoded Neurofeedback." The technique used brain scanning to monitor and detect the occurrence of specific complex patterns of activity tied to high self-confidence states, while 17 participants performed a simple perceptual task. Whenever a pattern of high confidence was detected, participants received a small monetary reward. By doing this, researchers were able to directly boost a person's own confidence unconsciously, meaning the participants were unaware of the manipulation taking place.

Machine learning is promising CMOs the biggest win ever with software that takes the guesswork and gut reaction out of measuring return on investment (ROI) for corporate event sponsorships. The bad news is many CMOs won't have the skills to capture the opportunity. CMOs investing millions in event sponsorships have had fewer options to measure the actual impact on brand exposure until now. According to Forrester research, CMOs need to combine the right and left sides of their brains to engage customers, as well as master technology and analytics for personalized, context-rich experiences. Forrester predicts the demise of 30 percent of CMOS in 2017 who won't be able to bring this fairly unique combination of skills into their marketing practice.
