In its first 13 years of its existence, Tesla Motors made some of the world's biggest, best-known companies look stuffy as it charged electric cars with sex appeal, built a zealous fanbase, set records for performance and quality, and even made its cars drive themselves--all the while dodging bankruptcy and even flirting with illegality to keep up its frenetic pace. Not bad, but this is just the beginning. CEO Elon Musk has long promised to change the world, with an affordable electric car for the masses, one that happens to drive itself--and to make a profit doing it. That's the key to transforming Tesla from a niche player into the company Musk says it can be, one making a palpable, positive impact on people's lives and the planet they share, while keeping shareholders happy. And 2017 is the year Tesla has to pull it off, or lose its dominant position and risk being left behind as one more daring automotive startup that just could't hang.

In a chat with ET Now, Amay Hattangadi, ED, and Swanand Kelkar, ED, discuss Morgan Stanley Investment Management's outlook for 2017 Edited excerpts: In your large portfolio, you are overweight on consumer stocks now and distinctly much higher than what the MSCI allocation would be. Why is it that you are so bullish again in a pocket where it is difficult to predict how the growth will shape up? Amay Hattangadi: When we look at consumers in India, we look at it as a combination of consumer staples, consumer discretionary and the consumer lending segment within financials. When we say we are overweight on consumer stocks, it is a combination of these sectors and this was one growth engine for the last two or three years. At a time when the corporate capex cycle was anaemic, there was surplus capacity in India and Indian industry was operating at about 70% overall capacity utilisation.
Cuba sets up free internet for Havana residents in pilot scheme
Downtown Havana resident Margarita Marquez says she received a special Christmas gift this year: web access at home, a rarity in Cuba, a country with one of the lowest internet penetration rates in the world. Ms Marquez, a 67-year-old retired university professor, was among those selected by the government two weeks ago to participate in a pilot project bringing the web into the homes of 2,000 inhabitants of the historic centre of the island's capital. Most of Communist-ruled Cuba's 11.2 million inhabitants only have access to internet at wi-fi hotspots, and only then if they can afford the 80p hourly tariff that represents around five per cent of the average monthly state salary. Only five per cent of Cubans are estimated to enjoy internet at home, which requires government permission. This is usually granted mainly to academics, doctors and intellectuals.

A few months ago I made the trek to the sylvan campus of the IBM research labs in Yorktown Heights, New York, to catch an early glimpse of the fast-arriving, long-overdue future of artificial intelligence. This was the home of Watson, the electronic genius that conquered Jeopardy! in 2011. The original Watson is still here--it's about the size of a bedroom, with 10 upright, refrigerator-shaped machines forming the four walls. The tiny interior cavity gives technicians access to the jumble of wires and cables on the machines' backs. It is surprisingly warm inside, as if the cluster were alive. Today's Watson is very different. It no longer exists solely within a wall of cabinets but is spread across a cloud of open-standard servers that run several hundred "instances" of the AI at once. Like all things cloudy, Watson is served to simultaneous customers anywhere in the world, who can access it using their phones, their desktops, or their own data servers. This kind of AI can be scaled up or down on demand.

When it comes to hardware design language, non-Apple/-Samsung phones tend to be all over the place, even within the same product line. One model of a phone may use onscreen soft buttons, the next one may have hard physical buttons. Meizu, on the other hand, has stuck with the same design language over at least a half dozen phones released in the past two to three years. U.K. aid body funding drone deliveries aimed at saving mothers, babies in Tanzania
LONDON – Drones delivering blood and medicine to rural areas of Tanzania could help to save the lives of many mothers and newborn babies in a country where one of the biggest causes of maternal deaths is blood loss during childbirth, the U.K. aid department said. The Department for International Development (DFID), which has given funding for the trial due to start early next year, said the drone deliveries could assist more than 50,000 births a year in the East African country. The drones will be able to carry up to 1 kg (2 pounds) of medical supplies and reduce delivery times to 19 minutes from the 110 minutes it takes on average by vehicle. "The U.K. is at the forefront of investing in cutting-edge technology to tackle the global challenges of today such as disease pandemics, medical emergencies and disaster responses," said Priti Patel, U.K.'s international development secretary. "This innovative, modern approach ensures we are achieving the best results for the world's poorest people and delivering value for money for British taxpayers," she said in a statement Thursday.
