Lenovo to launch 'home assistant' with Amazon's Alexa

Chinese tech giant Lenovo announced Tuesday it was launching a smart home assistant powered by Amazon's Alexa, becoming the latest firm to enter the market for voice-activated devices. The new Smart Assistant, to go on sale for US$129, will compete with Amazon's Echo speakers using the artificial intelligence developed by Amazon. Lenovo made the announcement ahead of the opening of the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show, which features a dizzying array of tech gadgets and concepts. Built in collaboration with Amazon, the Smart Assistant "recognises users' voice commands to conduct web searches, play music, create lists, calendar reminders and much more," a Lenovo statement said. Lenovo's move comes following Google's launch of a similar device which can respond to questions and voice commands and connect to smart appliances, so a user can set a thermostat or turn on an oven.

After 15 years of development and more than 200 flights, an Israel firm is confident its autonomous flying ambulance will be ready to hit the market by 2020 โ€“ and will come with a $14 million price tag. The Cormorant, formally known as the'AirMule', can transport about a half a ton (500kg) of weight at 115 miles (185 km) per hour. Designed by Urban Aeronautics, its developers say the military drone will be able to reach areas unfit for helicopters to deliver supplies and carry wounded soldiers to safety. A Matrix Factorization Approach for Learning Semidefinite-Representable Regularizers

Regularization techniques are widely employed in optimization-based approaches for solving ill-posed inverse problems in data analysis and scientific computing. These methods are based on augmenting the objective with a penalty function, which is specified based on prior domain-specific expertise to induce a desired structure in the solution. We consider the problem of learning suitable regularization functions from data in settings in which precise domain knowledge is not directly available. Previous work under the title of `dictionary learning' or `sparse coding' may be viewed as learning a regularization function that can be computed via linear programming. We describe generalizations of these methods to learn regularizers that can be computed and optimized via semidefinite programming. Our framework for learning such semidefinite regularizers is based on obtaining structured factorizations of data matrices, and our algorithmic approach for computing these factorizations combines recent techniques for rank minimization problems along with an operator analog of Sinkhorn scaling. Under suitable conditions on the input data, our algorithm provides a locally linearly convergent method for identifying the correct regularizer that promotes the type of structure contained in the data. Our analysis is based on the stability properties of Operator Sinkhorn scaling and their relation to geometric aspects of determinantal varieties (in particular tangent spaces with respect to these varieties). The regularizers obtained using our framework can be employed effectively in semidefinite programming relaxations for solving inverse problems.


An Interval-Based Bayesian Generative Model for Human Complex Activity Recognition

A complex activity consists of a set of temporally-composed events of atomic actions, which are the lowest-level events that can be directly detected from sensors. In other words, a complex activity is usually composed of multiple atomic actions occurring consecutively and concurrently over a duration of time. Modeling and recognizing complex activities remains an open research question as it faces several challenges: First, understanding complex activities calls for not only the inference of atomic actions, but also the interpretation of their rich temporal dependencies. Second, individuals often possess diverse styles of performing the same complex activity. As a result, a complex activity recognition model should be capable of capturing and propagating the underlying uncertainties over atomic actions and their temporal relationships. Third, a complex activity recognition model should also tolerate errors introduced from atomic action level, due to sensor noise or low-level prediction errors. A. Related Work Currently, a lot of research focuses on semantic-based complex activity modeling. Many semantic-based models such as context-free grammar (CFG) [26] and Markov logic network (MLN) [11], [18]) are used to represent complex activities, which can handle rich temporal relations.

Amazon set to take on eBay as firm begins allowing users to sell goods in India

Amazon is set to take on eBay by allowing people to sell their secondhand goods. The program, which is still in its pilot phase, has been launched as'Sell as Individual' and is only available in Bangalore so far. The service includes doorstep pick-up, packing and delivery and will compete with other companies that allow people to sell their used goods such as eBay, Quikr and Olx. The secondhand products are listed on the website and when someone orders it, an Amazon staff visits the seller and collects their product from their home at a time the seller chooses. Sellers are charged 15 cents (10 rupees) for items below $15 (1,000 rupees), 75 cents (50 rupees) for items between $15 and $75 (5,000 rupees), and $1.50 (100 rupees) for items sold at more than $75. Amazon has unveiled a convenience store in Seattle that uses technologies found in self-driving cars to replace cashiers.


Intel to take stake in German mapping firm HERE in automated driving push

U.S. chip maker Intel will take a 15 percent stake in German digital mapping firm HERE, it said on Tuesday, as it seeks to build its presence in automated driving technology. A filing to the German cartel office on Tuesday showed Intel has sought approval to buy a stake in the company, which is controlled by German carmakers Daimler, BMW and Volkswagen. Intel and HERE said in a statement that they had also signed an agreement to collaborate on the research and development of real-time updates of high definition (HD) maps for highly- and fully-automated driving. U.S. chip maker Intel will take a 15 percent stake in German digital mapping firm HERE, it said on Tuesday, as it seeks to build its presence in automated driving technology. Intel did not disclose how much it would pay for the stake but said the transaction is expected to close in the first quarter.
