Shock, dread and yakuza: games not to miss in 2017

The title implies yet another foray into video game action-horror, but the miseries you encounter here are of a different class. College dropout Mae Borowski returns home to find an impoverished American community that, through industrial decline (Possum Springs is a former mining town), has lost its hope and identity. Societal issues are expressed via individual symptoms in mental illness and depression. Illustrator Scott Benson's animation gives the game the texture of a luxury hipster fairytale book. It cannot disguise its dark, intimate, melancholic core.


Artificial Intelligence: Why Toyota and other car makers want this tech in by 2030

Toyota isn't alone in betting on AI; every other automaker, and software company, is looking closely at artificial intelligence. Toyota unveiled'Yui', the AI agent for a car, at the Consumer Electronics Show held in the US this week. Even Ford has entered the game, acquiring a machine learning company in Israel and shuttle-van startup Chariot. The Toyota Research Institute, which has built this technology, thinks these platforms can go live in car models by the end of the decade. It's a world that will see collaborative business models.

"I believe it's possible," said Bussmann, who until March was the chief information officer of UBS. Banks' wealth management departments and other investment firms are starting to adopt artificial intelligence. This is different from robo advisers. Those have simplistic, rules-based models -- you give them your age, risk tolerance, goals, and so on and they select a basket of ETFs for you.

Almost all of the major electronics brands – Sony, Samsung, LG and like – are present at CES, but the real fun is exploring the smaller stalls. There are products for almost everything people could ever need.


Life Insurance Company is Replacing Human Employees With AI

It looks like the job automation trend is getting to Japan, bringing the country a step closer to a future of layoffs in favor of intelligent machines. Japanese firm Fukoku Mutual Life Insurance Co. is laying off more than 30 of its employees and is replacing them with artificial intelligence (AI) systems that will perform payout calculations for policyholders. For Fukoku Mutual, the move is seen as a practical and beneficial, with expected increase in productivity at 30 percent and a calculated return on investment in less than two years."The "Meanwhile, it's expected that Fukoku Mutual will save about 140 million yen per year by cutting the 34 staff." Understandably, the 34 employees whose jobs are set to be eliminated by March 2017 aren't going to be so happy.

Virtual assistants are everywhere at CES this year - but one speaks louder than the rest. Amazon's Alexa has popped up in a bewildering list of devices including fridges, cars and robots. Manufacturers are clearly interested in making their appliances voice-operable, and many see Alexa as a great way to do this. But having Alexa also allows the appliances to gain capabilities, such as streaming music and turning smart lights on and off. How did Alexa come out on top and how will it benefit Amazon?


Honda's amazing Riding Assist motorcycle won't fall over

Honda has developed a self-balancing technology for motorbikes that keeps them upright. The system, which is still in the prototype stage, could reduce the number of motorcycle accidents in slow-moving traffic. Called Riding Assist, it involved the bike making tiny adjustments of its front wheel, moving back and forth sometimes almost imperceptibly, to keep the bike balanced. Companies like Japan's Murata Manufacturing and others have made small two-wheeled robots that can balance, but they rely on a gyroscope. Honda's technology doesn't, which makes it a step more advanced than others.

It's so fun to be in the middle of technology industry right now. The technology that will reshape how we use tech in the coming years. We can realize now the dreams we've had for years."
