WhatsApp is rolling out a new update to iPhone users, which lets them queue up messages when they don't have an internet connection. Previously, WhatsApp for iOS would make users wait to regain web access before allowing them to hit the green send button. The app will now automatically fires off the queued messages as soon as a connection has been re-established. The feature has been available on the Android version of WhatsApp for some time, and comes in particularly handy during train and tube journeys, when signal can be particularly patchy. A short episode today for which I'll turn it over now to Scientific American's associate tech editor, Larry Greenemeier. Larry Greenemeier: Computers have always been good at doing things that are really complicated for us humans. On the other hand, computers have a really hard time recognizing a particular voice or face in a crowd; something most kids learn to do before they're even out of diapers. But things are changing fast. Over the next decade or so, machines will more easily mimic inherently human abilities.

Some argue that robots do not have free will and therefore cannot be held morally accountable for their actions. But UW psychologists are finding that people don't have such a clear-cut view of humanoid robots. The researchers' latest results show that humans apply a moderate amount of morality and other human characteristics to robots that are equipped with social capabilities and are capable of harming humans. In this case, the harm was financial, not life-threatening. But it still demonstrated how humans react to robot errors.

Each robot is 1.3 meters, or about 4-feet, 3-inches, tall. They are fully actuated, which means that they have similar joints and movement capabilities to that of a human, including arms, legs and hands with fully functional fingers and an opposable thumb. "This is an historic event," said Dr. Youngmoo Kim, an associate professor and assistant dean of media technologies in the College of Engineering and the director of the Music and Entertainment Technology (MET) Lab. "Never before have seven adult-sized, fully actuated humanoids appeared on stage together, so it's truly a milestone in robotics research." This gathering of robots is the fruition of seeds planted in 2008 when Drexel received a five-year grant from the National Science Foundation's Partnership for International Research and Education (PIRE) Program with the goal of training engineers to work in global multi-disciplined design teams.

Maintaining data reliability is a resource-intensive uphill task for many organizations. Companies often spend too much effort on data reviews and cleanup, but seldom seem to catch up. POSB, one of Singapore's oldest banks and part of the DBS Banking Group, has launched an online virtual assistant, POSB digibank Virtual Assistant. It is powered by the KAI conversational bot/artificial intelligence (AI) platform from a New York-based fintech start-up, Kasisto. POSB's chatbot is available on Facebook Messenger and can answer questions relating to account balances, utility bill payments and fund transfer requests. It will also be rolled out to the WhatsApp and WeChat messaging platforms. Kasisto already supplies it flagship platform to DBS's subsidiary in India, DBS digibank. "We know that our customers are spending time conversing on their favourite mobile messaging apps, and we are immersing ourselves in the customer journey by making it easier and more convenient for them to engage us," explains Jeremy Soo, head of consumer banking group, Singapore, DBS Bank.

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn took the stage here at CES 2017 to discuss Nissan and the general automotive landscape. During this keynote, he announced several steps his company will take in the future to advance its idea of mobility. Carlos Ghosn finally gave out some details regarding the next-generation Nissan Leaf. It will come with the semi-autonomous ProPilot system, which is currently in the Japanese-market Nissan Sirena. Ghosn also stressed Nissan's dedication to using the Leaf for energy distribution. He talked about electric vehicles that can supply power to homes, buildings or even the grid itself.
