For decades, scientists have tried to make robots more like human beings by designing computer algorithms that allow them to learn and become smarter. In fact, similar kinds of biological algorithms might exist in people and govern not only how we learn and act but also how our species evolved. That is the firm belief of Professor Leslie Valiant, whose ground-breaking research has been fundamental to the development of machine learning, artificial intelligence and the broader field of computer science. "You think of an algorithm as something running on your computer, but it could just as easily run on a biological organism," said the 67-year-old in an interview in January (2016) with Quanta Magazine, which reports on developments in mathematics and the physical and life sciences. "If one has a more high-level computational explanation of how the brain works, one would get closer to having an explanation of human behaviour that matches our mechanistic understanding of other physical systems."

Now, American Zoetrope, the privately run American film studio, centered in San Francisco and founded by Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas, has teamed with entertainment and games industry veterans to a role-playing game based on the iconic movie. "Forty years ago, I set out to make a personal art picture that could hopefully influence generations of viewers for years to come," Coppola said. "Today, I'm joined by new daredevils, a team who want to make an interactive version of Apocalypse Now, where you are Captain Benjamin Willard amidst the harsh backdrop of the Vietnam War. I've been watching videogames grow into a meaningful way to tell stories, and I'm excited to explore the possibilities for Apocalypse Now for a new platform and a new generation."

Interestingly, it has a much stronger capacity for data analysis and is quick to write articles much faster than editors can ever think. Editors are ecstatic at the news as all kinds of reporters, including'pressitutes' and hardcore nationalist types, are just a switch away. Robots could help solve social care crisis, say academics

Humanoid robots, with cultural awareness and a good bedside manner, could help solve the crisis over care for the elderly, academics say. An international team is working on a £2m project to develop versatile robots to help look after older people in care homes or sheltered accommodation. The robots will offer support with everyday tasks, like taking tablets, as well as offering companionship. Academics say they could alleviate pressures on care homes and hospitals. Researchers from Middlesex University and the University of Bedfordshire will assist in building personal social robots, known as Pepper Robots, which can be pre-programmed to suit the person they are helping. It is hoped culturally sensitive robots will be developed within three years.

We start with a description of Lacan's work that we then take into our analytics methodology. In a first investigation, a Lacan-motivated template of the Poe story is fitted to the data. A segmentation of the storyline is used in order to map out the diachrony. Based on this, it will be shown how synchronous aspects, potentially related to Lacanian registers, can be sought. This demonstrates the effectiveness of an approach based on a model template of the storyline narrative. In a second and more comprehensive investigation, we develop an approach for revealing, that is, uncovering, Lacanian register relationships. Objectives of this work include the wide and general application of our methodology. This methodology is strongly based on the "letting the data speak" Correspondence Analysis analytics platform of Jean-Paul Benz\'ecri, that is also the geometric data analysis, both qualitative and quantitative analytics, developed by Pierre Bourdieu.


Understanding food inflation in India: A Machine Learning approach

Over the past decade, the stellar growth of Indian economy has been challenged by persistently high levels of inflation, particularly in food prices. The primary reason behind this stubborn food inflation is mismatch in supply-demand, as domestic agricultural production has failed to keep up with rising demand owing to a number of proximate factors. The relative significance of these factors in determining the change in food prices have been analysed using gradient boosted regression trees (BRT) - a machine learning technique. The results from BRT indicates all predictor variables to be fairly significant in explaining the change in food prices, with MSP and farm wages being relatively more important than others. International food prices were found to have limited relevance in explaining the variation in domestic food prices. The challenge of ensuring food and nutritional security for growing Indian population with rising incomes needs to be addressed through resolute policy reforms.
