Setback for Google As Huawei Builds AI Assistant
Alphabet Inc. subsidiary Google's (GOOG) artificial intelligence (AI) assistant is failing to catch on. A Bloomberg report this morning states that Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei, which uses Google's Android operating system for its phones, is developing its own voice-activated AI assistant. According to the report, Huawei's AI assistant, which will use local languages in China for communication, is targeted at the Chinese market and is intended to compete with the likes of Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) Siri and Amazon.com, This is the second such announcement after Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (SSNLF), which also uses Google's mobile operating system in its phones, announced its own digital assistant last year. While Samsung has the largest number of mobile phone shipments, Huawei is ranked third. Huawei has also announced that it will pre-install Alexa, Amazon's voice assistant, on its Mate 9 phones.

Building peace through video games in South Sudan
Lual Mayen, a 24-year-old software engineer, is determined to do what he can to bring change to South Sudan, a country ripped apart by civil war. Through the use of board and video games, he wants to promote unity and spread his message of peace throughout the world. "After the conflicts that started in 2013, I saw the horrible effects mass displacement could have with my own eyes. I witnessed it in IDP and refugee camps, but also online," Mayen told Al Jazeera. "These social clubs, both online and offline, were turned into sites for social evils and I could see the conflict brewing among various tribes that were crammed together. I knew that these scenarios could turn political and even physical, with people wanting revenge for what was happening to them."
Cryptography experts cast doubt on AI's role in cybersecurity
A panel of esteemed cryptographers at RSA 2017 expressed doubt over artificial intelligence's applicability in the cybersecurity space, tossing cold water on what otherwise appeared to be a hot technology at the conference. "The real problem is that what AI and machine learning is great at is lots of data and dealing with it effectively and what we're dealing with, with the serious attacks are anomalous situations and AI does not look like it's going to be useful there," said Susan Landau, professor of cybersecurity policy and professor of computer science at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, during the session earlier this week. Adi Shamir, Borman professor of computer science at the Weizmann Institute in Israel, said that AI would likely be helpful in defending against attacks when they happen, but not sniffing out threats before they materialize. "I think that AI can be very helpful on the defensive side," said Shamir, who earlier this month was named a recipient of the 2017 Japan Prize. "I doubt it would be so helpful for new zero days because this requires more ingenuity and originality. But when you talk about finding deviations from normal behavior, I think that AI systems are going to be very useful... Ronald Rivest, a professor at the MIT Institute, said that he was "skeptical" that AI would have a significant impact on security. He did, however, acknowledge that AI played an important role in spreading fake news and propaganda during the U.S. election. "There are AI bots talking on chat rooms... adding misinformation and disinformation," said Rivest. "I can imagine 10 or 15 years from now, we're going to find ourselves competing to find the humans among just a sea of bots talking to each other intelligently." But Shamir had a different vision for AI as it becomes super intelligent in the next 15 years: I can foresee a situation which we'll give all of the available data about cybersecurity to this program and it will think for a long time and then say in a calm voice, 'In order to save the Internet I'll have to kill it,'" said Shamir, facetiously.
Professors Build AI to Help Autonomous Vehicles Locate Themselves On Maps
Self-driving cars could account for 21 million new vehicles sold every year by 2035. Over the next decade alone such vehicles--and vehicles with assisted-driving technology --could deliver $1 trillion in societal and consumer benefits due to their improved safety. For autonomous vehicles to make good on that promise they will need onboard artificial intelligence (AI) technology able to link them to highly detailed maps that reflect every change in the status of lanes, hazards, obstacles, and speed-limits in real time. Researchers at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering are making this critical machine-to-machine handshake possible. Yi Fang, a research assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a faculty member at NYU Abu Dhabi, and Edward K. Wong, an associate professor in the NYU Tandon Department of Computer Science and Engineering, are developing a deep learning system that will allow self-driving cars to navigate, maneuver, and respond to changing road conditions by mating data from onboard sensors to information on HERE HD Live Map, a cloud-based service for automated driving.

Santander invests in artificial intelligence startups: sources
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Spanish lender Banco Santander SA has invested in two artificial-intelligence companies, part of the financial industry's increased focus on technology smart enough to mimic human thinking, sources familiar with the deals told Reuters. The bank's venture arm, Santander InnoVentures, bought stakes in Personetics Technologies, which provides automated customer service, and Gridspace, whose software can learn and interpret language the way a person would, the sources said. The size of the investments could not be determined and the sources asked not to be named because they were not allowed to disclose the information publicly. The deals underscore how lenders have become more interested in using artificial intelligence for a wide variety of tasks, including hiring, spotting fraud, improving call centers and recommending products for customers. Personetics, which has offices in New York, London and Tel Aviv, creates "chatbots" that can respond to customer questions through popular messaging platforms like Facebook Inc's Messenger.
Japan Keeps Accelerating With Tsubame 3.0 AI Supercomputer
The Global Scientific Information and Computing Center at the Tokyo Institute of Technology has been at the forefront of accelerated computing, and well before GPUs came along and made acceleration not only cool but affordable and normal. But its latest system, Tsubame 3.0, being installed later this year, the Japanese supercomputing center is going to lay the hardware foundation for a new kind of HPC application that brings together simulation and modeling and machine learning workloads. The hot new idea in HPC circles is not just being able to run machine learning workloads side by side with simulations, but to use machine learning to further accelerate the simulation, and we have a future feature story underway, based on conversations with researchers at TiTech and at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where the "Summit" hybrid CPU-GPU system is being built for the US Department of Energy, about this very topic. Suffice it to say, the idea is to integrate machine learning into the simulation, to do some of the computationally intensive stuff in a new way. So, as part of a climate model, you teach the system using machine learning to predict the weather by watching movies of the weather, or in astronomy, you use machine learning to remove the noise from the signal to find the interesting bits of a star field.
