Private companies working in auto tech are on pace to attract record levels of deals and funding in 2016, with autonomous driving startups leading the charge. As expectations around self-driving vehicles have risen, major corporations have ramped up their own initiatives, racing to deploy technology onto public roads. Using CB Insights' investment, acquisition, and partnership data, we identified 33 corporate groups involved in the development of advanced driver assistance systems and self-driving vehicles. They are a diverse group of players, ranging from automotive industry stalwarts to leading technology brands. The list is organized alphabetically (companies working on industrial autonomous vehicles were not included in this analysis).


MD Anderson Benches IBM Watson In Setback For Artificial Intelligence In Medicine

It was one of those amazing "we're living in the future" moments. In an October 2013 press release, IBM declared that MD Anderson, the cancer center that is part of the University of Texas, "is using the IBM Watson cognitive computing system for its mission to eradicate cancer." Well, now that future is past. The partnership between IBM and one of the world's top cancer research institutions is falling apart. The project is on hold, MD Anderson confirms, and has been since late last year.


Interpreting Outliers: Localized Logistic Regression for Density Ratio Estimation

We propose an inlier-based outlier detection method capable of both identifying the outliers and explaining why they are outliers, by identifying the outlier-specific features. Specifically, we employ an inlier-based outlier detection criterion, which uses the ratio of inlier and test probability densities as a measure of plausibility of being an outlier. For estimating the density ratio function, we propose a localized logistic regression algorithm. Thanks to the locality of the model, variable selection can be outlier-specific, and will help interpret why points are outliers in a high-dimensional space. Through synthetic experiments, we show that the proposed algorithm can successfully detect the important features for outliers. Moreover, we show that the proposed algorithm tends to outperform existing algorithms in benchmark datasets.

RealFace has built up a special facial recognition innovation that incorporates artificial intelligence and "brings back human perception to digital processes".The organization has goals of making profound learning-controlled biometric logins standard and passwords redundant while opening your cell phone or PC. Utrip raises $4M to build out artificial intelligence-based travel planning platform

Utrip, a Seattle startup that uses machine learning to help travelers plan their trips, just closed a $4 million funding round. Investors in the Series A round include Plug and Play, Tiempo Capital, Acorn Ventures, and executives from companies such as Apple and Costco, participating as angel investors. The cash will go toward Utrip's machine learning and data science operations, which fuel the platform's recommendation engine. "One of the things that our travelers love about Utrip is the depth with which we curate destinations and go beyond those top 10 lists that are available everywhere to offer experiences that are really unique and local and authentic for that destination," said Utrip CEO Gilad Berenstein. "That's one big priority, continuing to build out our machine learning capabilities as well as our human expert network, our chefs, artists, historians, etcetera."


Apple Secures iPhone 8 Facial Recognition Feature By Acquiring Israeli Firm RealFace

While Samsung debuted the now defunct Galaxy Note 7 with an iris scanner, Apple is skipping the eye-scanning technology for a more advanced biometrics security feature with its next-generation iPhone. Late last week, we reported about a 3D laser scanner that's predicted to be one of the standout features of the 10th anniversary iPhone. This week, there's now another reason to believe that the iPhone 8 could indeed come with the rumored 3D scanner. Just this past Sunday, The Times of Israel reported that a Tel Aviv, Israel-based cybertechnology startup was acquired by U.S. giant Apple Inc. The publication learned that the Israeli company, named RealFace, was established in 2014, and it is known for developing an advanced facial recognition software that provides a smart biometric login solution.


NVIDIA's Accelerated Computing Platform To Power Japan's Fastest AI Supercomputer

Tokyo Tech is in the process of building its next-generation TSUBAME supercomputer, featuring NVIDIA GPU technology and the company's Accelerated Computing Platform. TSUBAME 3.0, as the system will be known, will ultimately be used in tandem with the existing TSUBAME 2.5 system, to deliver an estimated 64.3 (in aggregate) PFLOPS of AI compute horsepower. On its own, TSUBAME 3.0, is expected to offer roughly two times the performance of its predecessor. TSUBAME 3.0 will be built around NVIDIA's Pascal-based Tesla P100 GPUs, which are not only more efficient, but higher-performing than previous-generation Maxwell GPUs in terms of performance per watt and performance per die area. It is estimated that TSUBAME 3.0 will deliver roughly 12.2 petaflops of double precision compute performance, which would place it among the world's 10 fastest systems according to the most recent TOP500 list.
