Lego Leverages Disney, Robots And Healthcare In Its Best Sets Of 2017

At New York Toy Fair last week Lego unveiled most of its set for Spring, Summer and Fall of 2017, here are the best ones. Whether you are a Lego collector or family builders, the selection is somewhat overwhelming. Clear though was that Disney and movie licences were driving the line. Whether it was sets from Frozen, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Star Wars or Moana the attention to film-inspired detail was impressive. Along with these were a number of new Minecraft sets, new kits for Ninjago, The Lego Batman Movie. Then there were Lego's own brands, Elves, Friends, City and Nexo Knights.


Facebook adds 'flags' for profile pictures, in move widely thought to be part of Mark Zuckerberg's new plan

Facebook will now let everyone add a flag to their profile picture, in a move thought to have a far wider significance than just letting people change up their photos. The change lets people add nearly 200 flags to their profile photos on the site. The frames began in 2015 as a way of showing support for a sport team – but has now widened to include a range of different national flags from the smallest to biggest countries. The change in itself is a reflection of the way that Facebook is giving people more and more tools to change up their pictures as a way of encouraging them to post more about themselves on the site. Changing pictures drives engagement and helps collect the data that Facebook uses to get ad revenues.

Nokia 3310 re-launch revealed: First details of new version of the world's most loved phone leaked

News of a potential re-launch for the iconic Nokia 3310 took the world by storm earlier this month, and the likelihood of a resurrection is growing stronger by the day. Fresh leaks have shed more light on the capabilities of the heavily tipped 2017 version of the handset, which is expected to go on sale for €59 (£50). According to Chinese site Vtech, the new Nokia 3310 will feature a colour screen, rather than the monochrome 84 x 84 display of old. Google's parent company accuses Uber of using stolen Lidar tech to speed up its self-driving car development

The race to bring self-driving cars to the road got uglier this week as the self-driving car company owned by Google parent Alphabet accused Uber of using stolen technology to speed up its autonomous car development. Waymo filed a lawsuit against Uber on Thursday accusing the ride-hailing company of stealing its trade secrets. "Competition in the self-driving space is a good thing; it pushes everyone to develop better, safer and more affordable technology. But we believe that competition should be fueled by innovation in the labs and on the roads, not through unlawful actions," the Waymo team said in a Medium post announcing the suit, which names both Uber and Otto, a startup owned by the ride-hailing company, as defendants. The lawsuit argues that former Waymo manager Anthony Levandowski took information when he left the company to co-found a venture that became Otto.

The robots were Joe McGillivray's idea. The first one arrived at Dynamic Group in Ramsey, Minn., by pickup truck in two cardboard boxes. With a mixture of excitement and trepidation, McGillivray watched as a vendor unpacked two silver tubes, assorted blue-and-gray joints and a touch screen and put them all together. When he was finished 10 minutes later, McGillivray beheld an arm that, had its segments not all been able to swivel 360 degrees, might have belonged to a very large N.B.A. player or a fairly small giant. Its "shoulder" was mounted to a waist-high pedestal on wheels. If it were to hail someone across the room, its "elbow" would reach eye level. Below its "wrist," which was triple-jointed for extra dexterity, there were sockets for various attachments. McGillivray, not sure yet if he wanted to keep the contraption, stuck a piece of clear tape to the wrist and drew a happy face on it, which made the arm look a bit as if it were putting on a puppet show. He hoped that this would help it look nonthreatening.


Google Launches Bare-Metal Cloud GPUs for Machine Learning Data Center Knowledge

Google has rolled out in beta a new cloud service that allows users to rent Nvidia GPUs running in Google data centers for machine learning and other compute-heavy workloads. While relatively few companies outside of a small group of web giants like Google itself use machine learning in production, there's a lot of development work going on in the field, with computer scientists building and training machine learning algorithms and companies mulling various business cases for using the capability. Training these systems requires a lot of computational horsepower, and at least today companies have found that harnessing the power of many GPUs working in parallel is the best way to get that horsepower. The problem is that building, powering, and cooling a GPU cluster is far from trivial – not to mention expensive – which makes renting one an attractive option, especially at the experimental stage, where most companies are with machine learning. It's a business opportunity for cloud providers, who already have experience with this kind of infrastructure and the resources to offer it as a service.

Nvidia cofounder Chris Malachowsky is eating a sausage omelet and sipping burnt coffee in a Denny's off the Berryessa overpass in San Jose. It was in this same dingy diner in April 1993 that three young electrical engineers--Malachowsky, Curtis Priem and Nvidia's current CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang--started a company devoted to making specialized chips that would generate faster and more realistic graphics for video games. East San Jose was a rough part of town back then--the front of the restaurant was pocked with bullet holes from people shooting at parked cop cars--and no one could have guessed that the three men drinking endless cups of coffee were laying the foundation for a company that would define computing in the early 21st century in the same way that Intel did in the 1990s. "There was no market in 1993, but we saw a wave coming," Malachowsky says. "There's a California surfing competition that happens in a five-month window every year. When they see some type of wave phenomenon or storm in Japan, they tell all the surfers to show up in California, because there's going to be a wave in two days. We were at the beginning."


Baidu reports higher revenue on lower profit for fiscal 2016 ZDNet

Chinese internet giant Baidu has released its fiscal 2016 results, reporting operating profit of 10.04 billion yuan, a 13.9 percent decrease from the year prior, on revenue of 70.5 billion yuan, up 6.3 percent from fiscal 2015. Mobile revenue represented 63 percent of total revenue in 2016, up from 2015's 53 percent, while online marketing revenues for the year reached 64.5 billion yuan, a 0.8 percent increase from 2015. Earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) in fiscal 2016 was 15.8 billion yuan, down 5.2 percent from 2015, while operating cashflow stood at 22.2 billion yuan. In its full year and fourth quarter results, Baidu chair and CEO Robin Li said that the company is well-positioned to lead China's growth in artificial intelligence (AI), based on its technology, data, and talent pool. "Our existing platform, including our search and newsfeed products, are enhanced by AI and enriched by our content and services ecosystem," Li said.


Kernel is trying to hack the human brain -- but neuroscience has a long way to go

For Bryan Johnson, the founder and CEO of neuroscience startup Kernel, the question is when, not if, we all have computer chips inside of our brains. Kernel, founded last fall with more than $100 million of Johnson's own money, is trying to better understand the human brain, so that we may one day program it to improve. The company is focusing first on medical applications, to gain a deeper understanding of the diverse and complex ways the brain can fail. Eventually, Johnson would like to move toward augmenting the organ to make us smarter and healthier and pave the way for interfacing directly with computing devices. Johnson, who made his fortune selling his payments company Braintree to PayPal for $800 million in 2013, doesn't have past experience in neuroscience.
