LG has kicked off MWC 2017 with the unveiling of its latest flagship, the G6. The handset's headline feature is its 5.7-inch'FullVision' display, which has an aspect ratio of 18:9 and is designed primarily for multi-tasking. It enables you to open two square app windows side by side, such as a web browser and the messaging app, providing on-screen access to more information at any one time. Open Bionics wins $1m 'Robotics for Good' prize

The award offers a global platform for innovation in AI and robotics as part of the UAE's commitment towards the National Innovation Strategy. Open Bionics uses 3D scanning and printing to produce low-cost bionic hands for amputees. The company blends robotics, inclusive design, fashion, and wearable technology to create lightweight, affordable prosthetics. The company states: "We can 3D scan an amputee's residual limb in about five minutes and then print them a custom socket and bionic hand in under five days [as opposed to the usual 12 week lead-time]. By adopting new and cheaper technologies we can speed up the prosthetics industry, save amputees tens of thousands of pounds, and offer a functional device that can benefit millions of people".

Artificial intelligence has been around since 1956 and has made some giant leaps in that time: beating the best human at chess, the best human at US gameshow Jeopardy and recently beating the best human at complex strategy game Go. Google's voice recognition technology now claims 98% accuracy and Facebook's DeepFace is said to recognise faces with a 97% success rate. There is no doubt that the relationship between men and machines is changing, and brands are on the cusp of making artificial intelligence an everyday element of their customer offerings.

Startup Intuition Robotics emerged from stealth on January 11, 2017, announcing a social robot aimed at keeping older adults active and engaged. The design and actions of the artificial intelligence-based device, ElliQ, make it look and feel less like a traditional robot and more as a friendly and approachable digital companion. It is unveiled this week as part of the exhibition New Old: Designing for our Future Selves at The Design Museum in London and was developed in collaboration with famed industrial designer Yves Bรฉhar and his studio, fuseproject. The world's advanced economies are facing today the challenge of responding to the needs of a rapidly aging population (about 15% of people in the United States and 26% in Japan are older than 65). Loneliness and social isolation are serious issues that sometimes accelerate specific health conditions and worsen the physical disabilities of older adults.

A blind man who narrowly escaped death when he was gunned down in the Philippines has developed software he hopes will offer life-changing independence to blind people. Marx Melencio was buying fried rice with his wife at a roadside store in Manila when he was shot in the chest and the head in an apparently random attack. The first bullet hit him 3mm from his heart. The second missed his brain by 2mm but singed his optic nerve, rendering him blind. Witnesses say the man who fired the gun was under the influence of both alcohol and drugs, but he's never been convicted.

Firstly, my response contains some bias, because I work at Google Brain and I really like it there. My opinions are my own, and I do not speak for the rest of my colleagues or Alphabet as a whole. I rank "leaders in AI research" among tech companies as follows: I would say Deepmind is probably #1 right now, in terms of AI research. Their publications are highly respected within the research community, and span a myriad of topics such as Deep Reinforcement Learning, Bayesian Neural Nets, Robotics, transfer learning, and others. Being London-based, they recruit heavily from Oxford and Cambridge, which are great ML feeder programs in Europe.


What Does Artificial Intelligence See In A Quarter Billion Global News Photographs?

What would it look like to ask a deep learning AI system to watch every political television advertisement of the 2016 presidential campaign season for two months and describe what it sees? That was the question I asked last February when I collaborated with the Internet Archive to take all 267 political ads they had identified (which had aired a collective 72,807 times as monitored by the Archive) and ran them frame-by-frame through Google's Cloud Vision API, producing what is likely the first large-scale application of production deep learning algorithms to describe the visual narratives of political advertising on television. Now, what if we took this same approach and instead of examining television, we looked at a quarter billion news photographs compiled from online news outlets in nearly every country of the world over the course of 2016? What would AI see in that vast archive of the visual narratives of the world's media? Google's Cloud Vision API is a commercial cloud service that accepts as input any arbitrary photograph and uses deep learning algorithms to catalog a wealth of data about each image, including a list of objects and activities it depicts, recognizable logos, OCR text recognition in almost 80 languages, levels of violence, an estimate of visual sentiment and even the precise location on earth the image appears to depict.
