SchoolApply startup uses AI to drive access to education
A mother was on the phone, crying. She could not contain her gratitude: her son had just been accepted to university thanks, in part, to a new startup called SchoolApply. "We really want to open up the world for students," says Daniel Bjarne, CEO and Co-Founder of SchoolApply, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) and search functionality to help students from anywhere in the world connect with educational programs abroad that best match their needs and potential. Demand for such a service is growing fast. By 2025, some eight million students are expected to have to travel to other countries to study.
People can match names to faces of strangers accurately
Most of us can guess the name of a stranger with up to 40 per cent accuracy, a study has found. This is because people grow to look more like their name, subconsciously changing their hairstyles, putting on weight, smiling or frowning. For example, society generally expects men called Bob to have rounder faces than those called Tim, because the word looks round. Can you beat the researchers' computer algorithm top score of 64 per cent accuracy in matching the names of strangers to their faces? Each correct match is worth 16.6 per cent.
NTT DoCoMo demos VR control of robots over 5G
While next-generation 5G cellular will bring faster downloads for consumers, the new networking technology is poised to bring big benefits to business users enabling new uses for cellular networks. At this week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Japan's NTT DoCoMo is demonstrating one such use: remote control of robots via a wireless virtual reality system. In one corner of the company's booth was a simulated factory floor with three robots. The area was surrounded by four depth-sensing 3D cameras that together provide enough video for an immersive, all-around virtual reality image. That 3D video, totaling roughly 700Mbps of data, was sent across a 5G radio link to a receiver where it was processed and fed to a VR headset.
SoftBank chief Son lays out 10,000-IQ computer vision with Jobsian style
SoftBank Group Corp.'s Masayoshi Son, sporting a black turtleneck similar in style to the late Steve Jobs, laid out his vision for the future of technology and called for partners to help make it happen at the smartphone industry's biggest annual gathering. Son reiterated his belief that computers will exceed humans in intelligence in three decades, and that within this period he expects one computer chip to have the equivalent of a 10,000 IQ. "I really believe this," he said at a keynote speech at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Monday. The growth in computer ability was "why I acquired ARM," he said. This is more than idle talk for Japan's second-richest man. SoftBank's recent deals include the $32 billion acquisition of ARM Holdings Plc, the chip designer that Son believes will play a key role in the development of artificial intelligence, and a $1.2 billion group-led investment in satellite startup OneWeb Ltd.

Ford wants drones to join forces with self-driving vans for faster deliveries
Ford has revealed its'Autolivery' concept for what it calls the'city of tomorrow', and envisions a future in which packages are delivered to houses by self-driving vans and drones. The motoring firm believes the system would streamline the delivery process, as the vans would be capable of transporting a large number of goods to an area, while the aircraft would be responsible for completing the final leg of the journey. Drones are both speedier than humans and capable of accessing destinations that cars can't, such as flats in tower blocks or venues without parking spaces. "Widely considered the most challenging part of the goods delivery process to automate, many companies are working on how to solve the complexity of delivering packages the last 15 metres, or from kerb to door," said Ford. Sony and Line Consider Alliance on AI-Powered Consumer Devices
Sony Corp. and Line Corp., Japan's most popular messaging service, are considering joining forces to develop devices powered by artificial intelligence. The companies are exploring opportunities around digital personal assistant technology to co-create a new communication experience, Sony said in a statement at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Monday. Sony unveiled concept earphones powered by Xperia Agent, a virtual butler that responds to voice commands and head gestures. While Sony's Xperia smartphones are an also-ran in a market dominated by Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., Chief Executive Officer Kazuo Hirai has resisted pressure to shutter the mobile business. He argues it will serve as a springboard into the nascent market for wearable and interconnected devices known as the Internet of Things.
Artificial intelligence advances to make farming smarter
More artificial intelligence, cheaper sensors and longer flying drones are only some of the technological advances that Kiwi farmers can look forward to on "data-driven" farms over the next 10 years. Microsoft Research principal researcher Ranveer Chandra has been in New Zealand for a week offering insights into precision agriculture and advances the United States technology company is working on to improve farming and food production. He said Kiwi farmers and their innovations could help lead world farming, but they would see more advances themselves over the next decade. Ranveer Chandra is a principal researcher for Microsoft. Farmers faced doubling food production to feed a growing population by 2050 and this would require more technological advances world-wide, he said..
