Baidu Expands U.S. Research Space With New Silicon Valley Site
Baidu Inc. plans to double its footprint in Silicon Valley with a second research and development facility, seeking to gain an edge in artificial intelligence technology. China's largest search engine provider will add capacity for 150 employees, the company said Friday in a statement. Baidu has about 200 people at its existing site in Sunnyvale, California. The two offices will be a mile apart. "It is becoming increasingly important in Baidu's global strategy as a base for attracting world-class talent," the company said in the statement.
Certifying a File System Using Crash Hoare Logic
FSCQ is the first file system with a machine-checkable proof that its implementation meets a specification, even in the presence of fail-stop crashes. FSCQ provably avoids bugs that have plagued previous file systems, such as performing disk writes without sufficient barriers or forgetting to zero out directory blocks. If a crash happens at an inopportune time, these bugs can lead to data loss. FSCQ's theorems prove that, under any sequence of crashes followed by reboots, FSCQ will recover its state correctly without losing data. To state FSCQ's theorems, this paper introduces the Crash Hoare logic (CHL), which extends traditional Hoare logic with a crash condition, a recovery procedure, and logical address spaces for specifying disk states at different abstraction levels. CHL also reduces the proof effort for developers through proof automation. Using CHL, we developed, specified, and proved the correctness of the FSCQ file system. Although FSCQ's design is relatively simple, experiments with FSCQ as a user-level file system show that it is sufficient to run Unix applications with usable performance. FSCQ's specifications and proofs required significantly more work than the implementation, but the work was manageable even for a small team of a few researchers. This paper describes Crash Hoare logic (CHL), which allows developers to write specifications for crash-safe storage systems and also prove them correct. "Correct" means that, if a computer crashes due to a power failure or other fail-stop fault and subsequently reboots, the storage system will recover to a state consistent with its specification (e.g., POSIX17). For example, after recovery, either all disk writes from a file-system call will be on disk, or none will be. Using CHL we write a simple specification for a subset of POSIX and build the FSCQ certified file system, which comes with a machine-checkable proof that its implementation matches the specification. Proving the correctness of a file system implementation is important, because existing file systems have a long history of bugs both in normal operation and in handling crashes.24

Robots could take over 38 percent of U.S. jobs within about 15 years, report says
More than a third of U.S. jobs could be at "high risk" of automation by the early 2030s, a percentage that's greater than in Britain, Germany and Japan, according to a report released Friday. The analysis by accounting and consulting firm PwC focused primarily on the economic outlook in Britain, but it included a section on automation in Britain and elsewhere. In the U.S., 38% of jobs could be at risk of automation, compared with 30% in Britain, 35% in Germany and 21% in Japan. China Finds a New Source of Cutting-Edge Military Technology: US Startups
As Washington fiddles, China is investing billions in U.S. startups with cutting-edge products that could have military applications at the same time it is dialing back investments in less critical American industries such as entertainment. A New York Times story this week says that among the startups are companies working on artificial intelligence for military robots, rocket engines, ship sensors and printers that could produce high-tech components such as computer screens for military jets. Many of the firms making such investments are owned by companies controlled by the Chinese government or connected to its leaders. A blog post last December on the website of CB Insights, which tracks startup investments, says that China poured $9.9 billion into new Silicon Valley firms in 2015 and made an additional $3.5 billion in tech investments in the first nine months of last year. The number and size of those tech investments in startups developing military applications were not broken out.

Police warn about Siri '108' prank
Police departments are warning iPhone users to ignore posts urging them to say "108" to Apple's digital voice assistant Siri. Siri has been a part of Apple's iPhone since 2011. Some of the posts tell users to say "108" to Siri, then close their eyes. When a user says "108" to Siri, it automatically dials local emergency services. The posts ask users to close their eyes because there is a five-second window where a user can press cancel, in case a call was placed accidentally. The prank has prompted police departments to post warnings on Facebook and Twitter urging iPhone owners not to fall for it.
