Hadamard Product for Low-rank Bilinear Pooling

Bilinear models provide rich representations compared with linear models. They have been applied in various visual tasks, such as object recognition, segmentation, and visual question-answering, to get state-of-the-art performances taking advantage of the expanded representations. However, bilinear representations tend to be high-dimensional, limiting the applicability to computationally complex tasks. We propose low-rank bilinear pooling using Hadamard product for an efficient attention mechanism of multimodal learning. We show that our model outperforms compact bilinear pooling in visual question-answering tasks with the state-of-the-art results on the VQA dataset, having a better parsimonious property. Bilinear models (Tenenbaum & Freeman, 2000) provide richer representations than linear models. To exploit this advantage, fully-connected layers in neural networks can be replaced with bilinear pooling. The outer product of two vectors (or Kroneker product for matrices) is involved in bilinear pooling, as a result of this, all pairwise interactions among given features are considered. Recently, a successful application of this technique is used for fine-grained visual recognition (Lin et al., 2015).

Up to one-third of Britishjobscould be taken over by robots by the early 2030s, impacting 10 million Britons but with women less likely to face redundancy, a UK study showed. The research, by accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, found 30 percent of UK jobs could face automation compared to 38 percent in the United States, 35 percent in Germany, and 21 percent in Japan. Researchers, however, said this wouldn't necessarily lead to less employment as jobs may change rather than disappear. But the distinction between men and women was clear, with PwC estimating 35 percent of men's jobs were at risk compared to 26 percent of women's because of the high number of women in sectors requiring social skills like education and health. Male workers are also more concentrated in jobs requiring lower education levels, like transportation and manufacturing.
'Ghost In The Shell: Deluxe Edition' Manga Review: An Excellent Re-Release Of A Cyberpunk Classic
Before the anime adaptations of Ghost in the Shell, there was the original manga by Masamune Shirow and it changed the world of cyberpunk fiction forever. When this manga first appeared at the end of the late 80's, it was during the final part of Japan's boom years. Many thought the good times would go on forever and in many ways, this manga was an example of that. It took the then fledgling science of its era and imparted Japan's industrial drive into a unique take on cyberpunk, the result was probably one of Shirow's best works and it's telling that it has gone on to create such a long running saga in the time since. This original manga then is where Ghost in the Shell started. It introduces us to Motoko Kusanagi, also known as the Major, who is a full-blown cyborg.

Matroid, a computer vision startup launching out of stealth today, enables anyone to take advantage of the information inherently embedded in video. You can build your own detector within the company's intuitive, non-technical, web platform to detect people and most other objects. Reza Zadeh, founder of Matroid, is an Adjunct Professor at Stanford who has toiled with the idea of a startup for the last decade -- just now jumping in the ring to catch the wave of democratization in the computer vision space. Matroid's comfort zone is picking out specified objects from video, rather than extracting insights from satellite or medical imagery. Instead of whipping out TensorFlow or Google Cloud's new Video Intelligence API, users simply upload a custom training set or choose from a curated library of hundreds of millions of images to establish their detector.

If there's one thing that labor economists and leaders in Silicon Valley generally seem to agree on, it's that increasingly sophisticated technology is coming to replace American jobs. According to a new report from PricewaterhouseCoopers, 38 percent of U.S. jobs are at high risk of being replaced by automation in the next 15 years, compared with 30 percent of jobs in the U.K. and 21 percent in Japan. The United States, like the United Kingdom, is dominated by service jobs in sectors like manufacturing, transportation, finance, and food service, and U.S. jobs are particularly at risk because, according to PwC's chief U.K. economist John Hawksworth, the tasks American workers perform are just easier to automate. Still, the White House seems completely uninterested in the imminent threat facing U.S. employment and wages, choosing to cast blame instead on China and Mexico for the decline of U.S. manufacturing jobs. "We want products made by our workers in our factories stamped with those four magnificent words--made in the U.S.A.," President Donald Trump declared on a recent trip to a Boeing plant in South Carolina.
