Artificial Intelligence Achieves Near Perfect Performance in Disease Diagnosis
The AI infused method has been created by researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre (BOIDMC) and Harvard Medical School (HMS). The recently developed AI aims at computers to interpret pathology images with the long-term goal being the creation of AI powered systems to make pathological diagnosis more accurate and efficient. The method is based on deep learning, a machine-learning algorithm used for a range of applications including image and speech recognition. The approach essentially teaches machines how to interpret complex patterns and structures observed in real life data by building multi-layer artificial neural networks. This process is believed to show similarities to the learning process occurring in neuron layers within the neocortex of the brain, the region where thinking occurs.

Musk startup Neuralink seeks to get brains to interface directly with computers
LOS ANGELES โ Not content to reach for Mars and dethrone fossil fuels, tech entrepreneur Elon Musk on Tuesday is turning his focus to delving into people's minds. In a message fired off Tuesday on Twitter, Musk appeared to confirm he is creating a startup called Neuralink devoted to enabling brains to interface directly with computers, accessing processing power and perhaps even downloading memories for storage. Difficult to dedicate the time, but existential risk is too high not to," Musk tweeted. The Twitter post by the founder of electric carmaker Tesla and exploration firm SpaceX came a day after a Wall Street Journal report saying the company had been formed. The Journal reported that the new startup will focus on "neural lace" technology, which involves implanting tiny brain electrodes capable of uploading and downloading thoughts.
Community detection and stochastic block models: recent developments
The stochastic block model (SBM) is a random graph model with planted clusters. It is widely employed as a canonical model to study clustering and community detection, and provides generally a fertile ground to study the statistical and computational tradeoffs that arise in network and data sciences. This note surveys the recent developments that establish the fundamental limits for community detection in the SBM, both with respect to information-theoretic and computational thresholds, and for various recovery requirements such as exact, partial and weak recovery (a.k.a., detection). The main results discussed are the phase transitions for exact recovery at the Chernoff-Hellinger threshold, the phase transition for weak recovery at the Kesten-Stigum threshold, the optimal distortion-SNR tradeoff for partial recovery, the learning of the SBM parameters and the gap between information-theoretic and computational thresholds. The note also covers some of the algorithms developed in the quest of achieving the limits, in particular two-round algorithms via graph-splitting, semi-definite programming, linearized belief propagation, classical and nonbacktracking spectral methods. A few open problems are also discussed.
A Neural Probabilistic Structured-Prediction Method for Transition-Based Natural Language Processing

We propose a neural probabilistic structured-prediction method for transition-based natural language processing, which integrates beam search and contrastive learning. The method uses a global optimization model, which can leverage arbitrary features over non-local context. Beam search is used for efficient heuristic decoding, and contrastive learning is performed for adjusting the model according to search errors. When evaluated on both chunking and dependency parsing tasks, the proposed method achieves significant accuracy improvements over the locally normalized greedy baseline on the two tasks, respectively.
Bandit-Based Model Selection for Deformable Object Manipulation

We present a novel approach to deformable object manipulation that does not rely on highly-accurate modeling. The key contribution of this paper is to formulate the task as a Multi-Armed Bandit problem, with each arm representing a model of the deformable object. To "pull" an arm and evaluate its utility, we use the arm's model to generate a velocity command for the gripper(s) holding the object and execute it. As the task proceeds and the object deforms, the utility of each model can change. Our framework estimates these changes and balances exploration of the model set with exploitation of high-utility models. We also propose an approach based on Kalman Filtering for Non-stationary Multi-armed Normal Bandits (KF-MANB) to leverage the coupling between models to learn more from each arm pull. We demonstrate that our method outperforms previous methods on synthetic trials, and performs competitively on several manipulation tasks in simulation.
Japan's Cerevo makes Ghost in the Shell's Tachikoma AI combat vehicle a reality
It's not the first time a product inspired by anime has been brought to life in the real world. However, this product is sure to attract more international Japanese anime fans than ever. Japan startup Cerevo, which has invented a number of smart home electronics and IoT products, announced an eighth-factor model of the multi-legged tank Tachikoma, a popular character from the animated series Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. They have begun accepting pre-orders on their website. The price is $1,799 and shipment is scheduled for June of this year.
Apple Takes Down Drone Notification App 'Metadata' From App Store -- Again
After numerous rejections, Apple finally decided to allow a drone-strike notification app back on the App Store Tuesday after it was pulled in 2015 -- and then took it down again hours later. The app called Metadata, created by Josh Begley from The Intercept, sends a notification every time a U.S. drone strike is reported in the news. Begley, created the app five years ago and called it Drone . He said Tuesday in an article for The Intercept Apple rejected the app three times for "excessively objectionable or crude content." However, the app didn't include graphic images or video and only aggregated news about drone strikes. "If anything about the app is'excessively objectionable or crude,' perhaps it's the airstrikes themselves," wrote Begley.
