Robots, not immigrants, are taking American jobs
They are coming and they will completely alter our economic reality. However, instead of planning for this revolutionary change, America's politicians -- from Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders on down -- continue to cling to the illusion that, with the right tinkering, there can be enough jobs enough for everyone, just like in the good old days. Well, the good old days are gone, and a story on the Futurism website demonstrates why: Changying Precision Technology Co.'s cellphone factory in China recently replaced 90% of its workers with machines and saw productivity increase by 250% while the number of product defects fell by 80%. This is great news for the company, not so great news for the now-unemployed workers. Because free-market capitalism moves relentlessly toward innovation and efficiency, this is a phenomenon that will be repeated in small steps and big leaps in every industrialized society.

Despite what Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin might think, the National Bureau of Economic Research and Silicon Valley executives, among many others, know it's already happening. And a new report from PwC estimates that 38 percent of American jobs are at "high risk" of being replaced by technology within the next 15 years. But how soon automation will replace workers is not the real problem. The real threat to American jobs will come if China does it first.
SpaceX: Falcon 9 makes space flight history as the first ever recycled rocket launch
SpaceX has made history by successfully launching and landing a used rocket for the first time. The California-based company launched one of its 229-foot-tall two-stage Falcon 9 rockets at 23.27 BST last night, with the aim of recovering its first-stage booster. While rocket sent a telecommunications satellite into orbit, the first-stage booster detached itself from its payload minutes after launch, righting itself and safely landing on a drone ship floating on the Atlantic Ocean. The first-stage booster, described by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk as the "most expensive part of the rocket", had previously been launched on 8 April last year. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.

Next month will mark the 47th anniversary of Apollo 13. The film that recounts the story is a favorite of mine, probably because it so masterfully captures the incredible suspense, fear, and hope felt by people everywhere, that I personally recall very well. I also know how an organization's digital transformation can generate similar reactions! Apollo 13 was likely a casualty of the space program's incredibly aggressive schedule. NASA, with U.S. political and military leaders, was motivated by competition from the U.S.S.R. and fear of the potential consequences of not being first.

WEF 2017 - Do ethics and AI use the same code?
With the market for robotics and artificial intelligence booming worldwide, how can industry leaders design principles and technical standards into their products that will benefit society as a whole? That was a key question debated at the World Economic Forum in Davos, yesterday. Among the panelists were IBM Chairman and CEO Virginia Rometty, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and MIT Media Lab Director Joichi Ito. Chairing the debate, CEO of Vista Equity Partners Robert F. Smith, said: We must bring a comprehensive and well-thought-out approach to managing the creative destruction that is inherent in embracing these ever-more-powerful tools, and frankly we must use these tools to repair the deficiencies in this capitalistic system and restore the social contract with the people on this planet. Bold words from a private equity firm with a $28 billion portfolio, and in Smith's view, AI has a central role to play in restoring that contract.
Watson and the jobs potential of growing human
The world is going to change more over the next five years than it has over the last fifteen. That, at least, is the opinion of Jeremy Waites, who describes himself as just a lowly storyteller, traveling around to telling tales about cool stuff. Officially that makes him an evangelist, and the'cool stuff' on which he evangelises is IBM's AI system, Watson. I met up with him at the recent Cloud Expo in London to discuss some of the wider issues about where AI fits in the business and wider world, what it can bring to those parties, and what impact it might have on the way work changes – or indeed continues to exist. Like a growing number of people in the AI business Waites is keen to stress that the'A' does not stand for'Artificial', but rather for'Augmented', on the basis that the former carries with it all those scary, sci-fi connotations.
Google and other tech giants grapple with the ethical concerns raised by the AI boom
With great power comes great responsibility--and artificial-intelligence technology is getting much more powerful. Companies in the vanguard of developing and deploying machine learning and AI are now starting to talk openly about ethical challenges raised by their increasingly smart creations. "We're here at an inflection point for AI," said Eric Horvitz, managing director of Microsoft Research, at MIT Technology Review's EmTech conference this week. "We have an ethical imperative to harness AI to protect and preserve over time." Horvitz spoke alongside researchers from IBM and Google pondering similar issues.
