There is a tendency with any new technology to believe that it requires new management approaches, new organizational structures, and entirely new personnel. That impression is widespread with cognitive technologies -- which comprises a range of approaches in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and deep learning. Some have argued for the creation of "chief cognitive officer" roles, and certainly many firms are rushing to hire experts with deep learning expertise. "New and different" is the ethos of the day. But we believe that successful firms can treat cognitive technologies as an opportunity to evolve or grow from previous work.
Automation is set to hit workers in developing countries hard
On Friday, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said he's "not worried at all" about artificial intelligence replacing human workers because it's "50-100 more years" off. In reality, data shows this is already happening -- with an estimated 38 percent of existing U.S. jobs at risk of being turned over to machines by 2030, according to research from PwC. Another study put out by the University of Oxford last year had similar estimates: The researchers found that 47 percent of US jobs were at risk of automation in the next two decades. But despite justified fears of obsolescence in the West, it is actually developing economies that are poised to be hit the hardest by fourth Industrial Revolution, or "Industry 4.0," where machines are networked together in "smart factories" that have little need for human input. This is already evident in China, where the domestic economy exploded in the last two decades thanks to Western companies that moved their manufacturing operations there.
Artificial Intelligence soon to be used in Indian banks, says Accenture
In the next stage of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, banks will use AI to help understand the intentions and emotions of customers for better interaction, a new report from Global professional services company Accenture said on Wednesday. According to the "Accenture Banking Technology Vision 2017" report, more than three-quarters (78 per cent) of bankers globally and 87 per cent in India believe that AI would enable simpler user interfaces eventually helping them create a more human-like customer experience. In addition, four out of five global respondents (79 per cent) and nearly nine out of ten (87 per cent) bankers in India believe that AI would revolutionise the way banks gather information and interact with customers. "Indian banks are embracing digital solutions for interacting with customers; the next step is implementing the enabling power of AI," Piyush Singh, Managing Director and Head of Accenture Financial Services group in India, said in a statement. According to the report, three-quarters (76 per cent globally) and 83 per cent in India believed that within three years banks would deploy AI as their primary method for interacting with customers.

The Singularity of Sentience
The word "singularity" has been thrown around a lot these days; Specially in the super AI believer world. But in the lack of a better word, I don't have a choice but to risk being guilty of sounding cliche. Singularity is a point beyond which normal set of axioms and theorems of our understanding of a certain thing break down. It is what happens to all the understanding of physics beyond the event horizon near a black hole. Last year, we learned about the remarkable scale of the FBI's facial-recognition technology, with its access to nearly 412 million photos--many originating from sources unrelated to crime, such as ID documents. The intelligence agency has been trying to create a system that can accurately identify criminals in, say, CCTV footage--though it wasn't then known how well the bureau's software worked, nor whether it actually improved investigations. Now, we have at least a little more insight into the program. The Guardian reports that a House oversight committee hearing last week revealed some interesting new details about the proliferation and abilities of the FBI's facial-recognition systems. First, there is a very good chance that you, as an American, appear within the database. Among those many millions of photos, it turns out, are the likenesses of around half the country's adult population.
