Nest Labs Tech Chief Talks Robots and Tennis at Fortune's Brainstorm Tech Dinner
When Yoky Matsuoka was a small child in Tokyo, she dreamed that one day she would be the next Serena Williams. But while she never made it to Wimbledon, Matsuoka's pioneering work studying robotics and the human brain earned her the prestigious MacArthur "genius" fellowship. Speaking at Fortune's Brainstorm Tech dinner in San Francisco on Wednesday, Matsuoka discussed her work in the red-hot field of artificial intelligence and her career at Apple aapl, Google's googl experimental research group, and Nest, the home technology arm of Google's parent company. Matsuoka first became enamored with robotics when she attended the University of California at Berkeley. At the time she wanted to merge her love of tennis with robotics, and thought it would be cool to potentially build a tennis buddy "with legs and arms and eyes with computer vision" that could track a tennis ball and hit with her like a human. But building such a robot is very complex.
SelfieBoost: A Boosting Algorithm for Deep Learning
We describe and analyze a new boosting algorithm for deep learning called SelfieBoost. Unlike other boosting algorithms, like AdaBoost, which construct ensembles of classifiers, SelfieBoost boosts the accuracy of a single network. We prove a $\log(1/\epsilon)$ convergence rate for SelfieBoost under some "SGD success" assumption which seems to hold in practice.
Tech firm Earth 2050 reveals its vision of life in 2050
It is the year 2050, sex bots have ruined human relationships, clothes are sprayed on your body and you spend your weekends at a lawless adult amusement park. Although the scenarios sound like the plot of a science fiction film, they are among many predictions futurologists have made about life just 33 years from now. The project, called Earth 2050, highlights predictions for cities around the globe and different artefacts people could encounter in the not-so-distant future. The interactive multimedia project was created by Kaspersky Lab, a global cybersecurity firm, in honor of its 20 years in the market. To create Earth 2050, the team collaborated with futurologists such as Ian Pearson, other researchers and spoke with artists and scientists in order to capture a realistic view of what is yet to come.

An engineer filtered an episode of Ross's PBS television show'The Joy of Painting' through the artificial neural network DeepDream, which can'see' objects and animals that are not really there. The video shows a segment with Ross painting his iconic happy trees, but instead of seeing fluffy green bushels, viewers are presented with bug-eyed creatures on the canvas. Startup Twenty Two Motors to create smart scooter powered by artificial intelligence
MUMBAI: A prototype of a smart electric scooter is taking shape at the Gurugram-based Twenty Two Motors complete with GPRS, GPS and devices such as gyroscope and accelerometer. The startup, founded in August 2016 by automobile-loving engineer Parveen Kharb and Vijay Chandrawat, a software engineer with a career spanning startup roles, raised Rs 10 crore last week from a clutch of high-net-worth individuals in auto industry and plans to launch their innovative scooter at the next Auto Expo in February 2018. "The smart scooter is powered by artificial intelligence and all information is accessible on our server through a cloud system," said chief executive Kharb. The rider is always connected to the scooter via the mobile application that allows remote control and access. The cloud system allows for troubleshooting automatically.
Japan's robot revolution will impact U.S. jobs
While visiting Japan and interviewing officials on the robotics revolution that is sweeping much of Asia, it became clearer than ever to me that President Donald Trump's plans to bring back low-skilled manufacturing jobs to America are a political illusion. Trump should take some time off from the golf course and visit this part of the world, where he would see how fast Japan, China and South Korea are developing their robotics industries. They are replacing massive numbers of workers with ever faster, more efficient and cheaper robots, and the United States will have to do the same to remain competitive. If Trump goes ahead with his plans to clamp down on U.S. free trade agreements with Mexico and other lower-wage countries in order to bring these jobs back to America, he will be wasting his time. These jobs will never go back to American workers.
Payments are all that's needed for chatbots to deliver on their promise, says Kik CEO
After the initial hype, chatbots have been written off by many in the tech industry for failing to deliver on their promise. But one of the leading figures behind chatbots believes one missing component can spark the revolution: payments. Initially viewed by many as replacements for apps, and a method to increase customer engagement, there are few early examples of tangible success to date, as a recent report from Marketing Land explained in depth. "If I were looking at [chatbots] from the outside, I'd be saying the same thing," Kik CEO Ted Livingston told TechCrunch in an interview. "Right now, it is in a holding pattern until we get payments [but] we've seen so many killer examples of unlocking the world around you that we know there is magic there."
