Google's AlphaGo AI to take on world's top Go player in May
After Google-owned DeepMind's virtual Go champion AlphaGo took on and defeated one of the top-ranked human players in the world, it looks like Google wants to build some bridges, explore the AI-human interaction dynamic โ and see if AlphaGo can take on the very best human Go player in the entire world. Google is partnering with the China Go Association and the Chinese Government to host some of China's top Go players and AI researchers from China and Google at a summit May 23-27 designed to test the upper limits of its AI, as well as give human players a chance to study the unusual strategies AlphaGo has put into play in the age-old game. The five day "Future of Go Summit" will include special match variants where professional Chinese Go players will face off against one another in partnership with an AlphaGo AI teammate, alternating moves between human and computer players. Another match will put a team of humans working in concert against AlphaGo, and finally, AlphaGo will take on Ke Jie, the top-ranked Go player in the world, in a traditional three-game match. Piggybacking on the Go festival is a forum hosting AI experts from across China, with discussions about AlphaGo's progress, its supporting technologies and its potential applications in helping solve real world problems.
Volkswagen expands footprint in China with artificial intelligence venture
Volkswagen is betting big on China, expanding its footprint in the world's second-largest economy -- despite a slowdown in growth. The German automaker announced a $180 million investment into Chinese firm Mobvoi on Thursday. The tie-up will focus on implementing Mobvoi's artificial intelligence technology, such as its voice recognition feature and a smart rearview mirror, to help improve drivers' experiences. "We are impressed by Mobvoi's innovative approach of AI technologies, and we are pleased to form this joint venture to explore the next generation of smart mobility," Jochem Heizmann, CEO of Volkswagen China said in the joint statement. Despite slower growth in China, Volkswagen has continued to invest heavily in the world's second-largest economy.
Robots are starting to replace human security guards in Singapore
It's no RoboCop, but this autonomous patrol bot is going to be seen more and more often around Singapore. Ademco, a local security services company, recently launched a rent-a-robot service, in response to fewer people signing up to work as security guards. The 1.6m-tall robots are less like China's egg-shaped robot police, but more like a submarine, with five cameras on its long neck, two front cameras, and four wheels. The robot can also record licence plates, as well as a 360-degree view of surrounding activities from up to 10 meters (32 feet) away. It'll also send alerts to a 24-hour manned command center if it detects abnormalities like fire or loud sounds.
Facebook friend requests from dead people hint at horrifying truth of 'profile cloning'
It's horrifying enough to have to deal with a person's social media accounts after their death. That's without the added stress of having that same account appear to be active. Facebook users have reported receiving friend requests from accounts associated with dead friends and family members. And aside from the obvious distress such a request can cause, it also points to a worrying scam that affects people on Facebook. Such requests appear to be the result of cloning or hacking scams that see criminals try and add people on the site, and then use that friendship as a way of stealing money from them or running other cons.
Kodi ban: Amazon cracks down on controversial service
Amazon has announced a crackdown on media players that enable consumers to illegally access pirated content. The firm has warned sellers that their accounts face termination if they're found to be selling "certain" prohibited streaming media players. "Products offered for sale on Amazon should not promote, suggest the facilitation of, or actively enable the infringement of or unauthorized access to digital media or other protected content," reads the company's warning. "Any streaming media player or other device that violates this policy is prohibited from sale on Amazon." The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.
Google's AI will take on the world's top Go player next month
It's been a busy year for Google Deepmind. You might remember AlphaGo resoundingly beating Go grandmaster Lee Sedol by four games to one and secretly schooling some of the world's best Go players online, but the team has also found time to help Britain's national health service treat patients and arm its computer with new tricks to help it learn faster and "remember" previous knowledge. AlphaGo can now justifiably be considered one of the world's best Go players, but the Deepmind team can't make a bonafide claim until its AI has beaten the world number one: 19-year-old Korean Ke Jie. Deepmind co-founder and CEO Demis Hassabis has now confirmed that after months of speculation, the match is on. At the Future of Go Summit between May 23rd to May 27th, Google and the China Go Association (with help from the Chinese government) will bring together AlphaGo and some of the world's best Go players and AI experts to "explore the mysteries" of the ancient board game. There will be a variety of games on offer including Pair Go, where Chinese professionals will face off against each other but alternate moves with an AlphaGo teammate.
DeepMind's AlphaGo to take on five human players at once
A year on from its victory over Go star Lee Sedol, Google DeepMind is preparing a "festival" of exhibition matches for its board game-playing AI, AlphaGo, to see how far it has evolved in the last 12 months. Headlining the event will be a one-on-one match against the current number one player of the ancient Asian game, 19-year-old Chinese professional Ke Jie. DeepMind has had its eye on this match since even before AlphaGo beat Lee. On the eve of his trip to Seoul in March 2016, the company's co-founder, Demis Hassabis, told the Guardian: "There's a young kid in China who's very, very strong, who might want to play us." As well as the one-on-one match with Jie, which will be played over the course of three games, AlphaGo will take part in two other games with slightly odder formats. One, "Pair Go", will see two human Go professionals play against each other, each partnered up with their own iteration of AlphaGo.
AI player AlphaGo to play Chinese Go champion
DeepMind's AlphaGo program will test its artificial intelligence capabilities in May against top Go player Ke Jie. The match of three games in Wuzhen, China between AlphaGo and the Chinese player comes about a year after the computer program beat by 4-1 a key player, the South Korean Lee Se-dol, in a game that is regarded as involving more complex strategy than even chess. During the game, players take turns to place black or white pieces, called "stones," on the 19-by-19 line grid. The aim is to capture the opponent's stones by surrounding them and encircling more empty space as territory. AlphaGo has been seen as a major contender because of its ability to learn from its experience, sometimes resulting in far-from-human but nevertheless successful moves.
A Newfangled Traffic Light Built for People and Robots
The traffic light's three colored circles work hard, managing the flow of traffic around the world. Evgeny Arinin acknowledges this, and admires the design for its enduring effectiveness. But the Russian industrial designer believes traffic signals could communicate instructions more clearly. With that in mind, he's crafted an alternative: an LED display that uses its shape, big arrows, and punchy icons to loudly articulate the rules of the road. Arinin's design is still a concept (and a finalist in this year's Lexus Design Awards), but it spotlights a few cracks in current traffic signage systems.
Machine Learning Will Save India's Cows from Bad Drivers
In certain parts of the world, cow collisions are the stuff of legend. A car traveling at any significant speed up against a full-grown cow travelling at no speed is most often the end of the car, the cow, and maybe the human(s) inside of the car. That's up to 1,800 pounds of beef standing there with a center of gravity well-optimized to ensure that those pounds wind up where they can be most dangerous. Cows on roads are a big problem in India, where rapid urbanization and industrialization has meant that new roads are increasingly being laid through rangeland. A 2015 study found that some 6 percent of accidents in India can be attributed to animals on the road.
