The PowerRay drone is an aquatic spyglass for playboy fishermen

Who needs fishing prowess when you have a remote-controlled, sonar-equipped, bait-dropping, mini-submersible at your disposal? Because with the new PowerRay underwater drone, that's exactly what you get. The PowerRay UUV comes from Beijing-based drone manufacturer PowerVision, makers of the PowerEgg UAV that we saw last August. While the Ray officially debuted back at CES in January, a technical issue with their display (read: their tank sprung a leak) prevented the company from showing off the device in its natural environment. However, at the company's launch party at the Aquarium of the Bay in San Francisco this week, we were afforded a close up view of the new drones.

Microsoft: AI Isn't Yet Adaptable Enough to Help Businesses Microsoft's top research executive says it's too difficult to customize powerful machine-learning systems to an individual company's needs. The AI revolution may take longer than some expect to spread from Silicon Valley into other industries. Recent breakthroughs in machine learning have let tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Facebook build impressive new businesses and products powered by software that parses text and images. Some have launched cloud services they say can "democratize AI" by helping other companies do the same. But Peter Lee, vice president at Microsoft's research division, said this week that the most valuable, high-end machine-learning systems so useful to tech giants are still too inflexible and expensive for the company to offer its business customers.


Payments is the 'killer app' for chatbots

Integrating payments capabilities into messaging apps could be the key to making chatbots the next big platform, according to Kik CEO Ted Livingston. The popular North American chat app tested payments integration in trials at fast food restaurants in February 2016, according to Forbes, however there is no established method of payment for Kik's more than 20,000 chatbots. Livingston aims to have a solution to chat app payments "soon," according to TechCrunch.

Yasuo Kuniyoshi is a man with an extraordinary plan. Kuniyoshi, a professor at the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, has been attempting to produce an utterly convincing artificial being for the past 30 years. "A robot," he says, "that has developed the real ability to understand correctly what people are saying, and is able to converse and interact with them naturally, just as humans do with each other, based on its own experiences and bodily sensations." I've been thinking about Kuniyoshi's work since seeing the recent Hollywood remake of "Ghost in the Shell." The original anime from 1995 was hugely influential and, together with "Akira" and "Spirited Away," is one of the most well-known Japanese animes in the West.

It was so simple, once upon a time. The 14th-century "Tsurezuregusa" ("Grasses of Idleness"), random musings of a monk named Yoshida no Kenko (1283-1350), is a perennially delightful source. "A man should never marry," wrote Kenko. "I am charmed when I hear a man say, 'I am still living alone.'" When it comes to Dr. Siddartha (Siddhartha Mukherjee), perhaps a lot of people are unfamiliar with his name. But a lot of people are familiar with his two book, "the king of all diseases: cancer," and "genes: Intimate History.". The former allows Dr. Mukherjee to get a non fiction Pulitzer prize, while the latter was recommended as the best book of 2016 by Mr. Bill Gate. Recently, Dr. Mukherjee in "New York guest" (The New Yorker) published a long article, the unique perspective of a doctor, artificial intelligence survey in recent years the impact for medicine. The seven story is he in this long article record, outlines the future doctors and artificial intelligence, harmonious coexistence. The author Dr. Mukherjee is a doctor, but also a good writer. One night in November 2016, a 54 year old woman in New York, Bronx (Bronx) was sent to the emergency room at the Columbia University (Columbia University) medical center because of a severe headache. She told the emergency room doctor that his vision was blurred and his left hand was numb. The doctor arranged for CT. A few months later, on January, one of the 4 radiologists huddled in front of a computer on the third floor of the hospital, the room was dark and windowless, with only the screen light, which seemed to be filtered by the sea. She's training them to read CT. "Once the brain shows death and gray, it's easy to diagnose a stroke," Dr. Lignelli-Dipple said. The key is to diagnose a stroke before most nerve cells die." A stroke is usually caused by a blockage or bleeding of the blood vessel. The radiologist has about 45 minutes of window time so that the doctor can intervene in time to dissolve the clot. "Imagine you're in the emergency room right now," continued Dr. Lignelli-Dipple. "Every minute, a part of the brain dies.


Emotional chatting machine assesses your emotion and copies it

Chatbots have a long and venerable history dating back to the 1960s and the famous Eliza bot that fooled some people into thinking they were chatting with a real human. Since then, computer programs capable of conducting conversations have become progressively more advanced with greater ability to understand content and respond appropriately. And yet the ability to reproduce human speech convincingly still eludes chatbots. Talk to one for any length of time and it soon becomes clear that it is a machine. One reason is that computers are unable to gauge the emotional content of conversations and empathize accordingly.


Creating machines that understand language is AI's next big challenge

About halfway through a particularly tense game of Go held in Seoul, South Korea, between Lee Sedol, one of the best players of all time, and AlphaGo, an artificial intelligence created by Google, the AI program made a mysterious move that demonstrated an unnerving edge over its human opponent. On move 37, AlphaGo chose to put a black stone in what seemed, at first, like a ridiculous position. It looked certain to give up substantial territory--a rookie mistake in a game that is all about controlling the space on the board. Two television commentators wondered if they had misread the move or if the machine had malfunctioned somehow. In fact, contrary to any conventional wisdom, move 37 would enable AlphaGo to build a formidable foundation in the center of the board. The Google program had effectively won the game using a move that no human would've come up with. AlphaGo's victory is particularly impressive because the ancient game of Go is often looked at as a test of intuitive intelligence. The rules are quite simple. Two players take turns putting black or white stones at the intersection of horizontal and vertical lines on a board, trying to surround their opponent's pieces and remove them from play.


The ability to predict earthquakes in the lab raises the possibility that the same thing will be possible for real earthquakes, too

Geologists have long been able to work out the approximate risk of an earthquake. Their approach is to work out when the fault moved in the past and use any periodicity to predict the future. The most famous example involves the Parkfield segment of the San Andreas Fault in California, one of the most carefully studied faults on the planet. Earthquakes occurred here in 1857, 1881, 1901, 1922, 1934, and 1966, suggesting a pattern in which quakes occur every 22 years give or take a few years. Geologists therefore predicted that a quake would occur between 1988 and 1993, but they had to wait until 2004 for their temblor.
