A river of red-hot lava was caught flowing out from Mount Etna in breathtaking new drone footage. Smoking magma can be see rolling down the snow-topped mountainside as the drone glides in and out of the red-hot flow. The latest outpouring comes just weeks after an eruption forced a BBC reporter and a scientist to flee for their lives. Etna, at 3,330 metres (10,926 feet), is the highest volcano in mainland Europe. The volcano, one of the most active in the world, has been largely dormant for the last two years.
Soft underwater robot could be used to survey coral reefs
A new roboray that could survey the oceans coral reefs has been designed by researchers. The bot was modeled after manta rays and is made of transparent silicon parts which are mostly invisible to other marine life. The robot could be used for exploration studies, including examining shipwrecks without damaging them. The robot, designed by researchers based at Zhejiang University in China, can swim at a speed of 6.4 centimeters (2.5 inches) per second, or 0.69 body lengths per second. This is slower than similar sized fish, who typically swim four times faster.
Toyota unveils robotic leg that lets paralysed people walk
Toyota is introducing an Iron Man-style robotic leg brace designed to help partially-paralysed people walk. The Welwalk WW-1000 system is made up of a motorized mechanical frame that fits on a person's leg from the knee down. The robot assistant could help older people left partially paralysed after a stroke, Toyota claims. The patients can practice walking wearing the robotic device on a special treadmill that can support their weight. Toyota demonstrated the equipment at its Tokyo headquarters on Wednesday. One hundred such systems will be rented to medical facilities in Japan later this year, Toyota said.

Cheating has become an unfortunate running trend in the world of Chinese competitive races. But organisers of a half-marathon taking place in Beijing this weekend will be employing technology which should stop con artists in their tracks. Facial recognition is being used to prove that entrants to the race are the genuine article - and not impostors employed to help cunning criminals take home lucrative cash prizes. Up to 20,000 people are expected to take part in the Beijing half-marathon, which takes place on Sunday. Every contestant will be forced to have their bio-metric data stored by the facial recognition system.

Boosting with Structural Sparsity: A Differential Inclusion Approach

Boosting as gradient descent algorithms is one popular method in machine learning. In this paper a novel Boosting-type algorithm is proposed based on restricted gradient descent with structural sparsity control whose underlying dynamics are governed by differential inclusions. In particular, we present an iterative regularization path with structural sparsity where the parameter is sparse under some linear transforms, based on variable splitting and the Linearized Bregman Iteration. Hence it is called \emph{Split LBI}. Despite its simplicity, Split LBI outperforms the popular generalized Lasso in both theory and experiments. A theory of path consistency is presented that equipped with a proper early stopping, Split LBI may achieve model selection consistency under a family of Irrepresentable Conditions which can be weaker than the necessary and sufficient condition for generalized Lasso. Furthermore, some $\ell_2$ error bounds are also given at the minimax optimal rates. The utility and benefit of the algorithm are illustrated by several applications including image denoising, partial order ranking of sport teams, and world university grouping with crowdsourced ranking data.
FML-based Prediction Agent and Its Application to Game of Go

In this paper, we present a robotic prediction agent including a darkforest Go engine, a fuzzy markup language (FML) assessment engine, an FML-based decision support engine, and a robot engine for game of Go application. The knowledge base and rule base of FML assessment engine are constructed by referring the information from the darkforest Go engine located in NUTN and OPU, for example, the number of MCTS simulations and winning rate prediction. The proposed robotic prediction agent first retrieves the database of Go competition website, and then the FML assessment engine infers the winning possibility based on the information generated by darkforest Go engine. The FML-based decision support engine computes the winning possibility based on the partial game situation inferred by FML assessment engine. Finally, the robot engine combines with the human-friendly robot partner PALRO, produced by Fujisoft incorporated, to report the game situation to human Go players. Experimental results show that the FML-based prediction agent can work effectively.

Samsung announces change in plans for Bixby Assistant on Galaxy S8/S8
One of the biggest talking points as far as the forthcoming release of the latest smartphone flagships from the South Korean major Samsung, has been its AI-based digital assistant'Bixby'. There were discussions on how it could be a game-changer in the industry and might set new standards in the industry. We had reported even in these columns that some experts felt'Bixby' might give Apple's Siri a run for its money. But it now transpires that the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 may not sport the'Bixby' assistant in its full form, when the phone reaches the hands of customers later in April'2017. In a statement issued by Samsung, it has been stated that there are some issues related to the voice detection module in Bixby, particularly when spoken in English. They would, therefore, like to work on it and the full function assistant will be made available only by spring this year.
