At first glance, the letter from the Delhi police commissioner's desk could have easily been dismissed as another routine laundry list of his department's "achievements" in the previous year. A closer look at the letter, written a little over two years ago, would have sprung a pleasant surprise in the context of the city police's technology prowess. The Delhi Police, according to the letter, had partnered with the Indian Space Research Organisation to implement CMAPS--Crime Mapping, Analytics and Predictive System--under the "Effective use of Space Technology-based Tools for Internal Security Scheme" initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014. CMAPS generates crime-reporting queries and has the capacity to identify crime hotspots by auto sweep on the Dial 100 database every 1-3 minutes, replacing a Delhi Police crime-mapping tool that involved manual gathering of data every 15 days. It performs trend analysis, compiles crime and criminal profiles and analyses the behaviour of suspected offenders--all with accompanying graphics.
China launches its first unmanned cargo spacecraft
China has launched its first cargo spacecraft, making further progress in its goal of establishing a permanently manned space station by 2022. The Tianzhou-1 cargo resupply spacecraft lifted off early evening on Thursday on a Long March-7 Y2 rocket from the Wenchang Satellite Launch Centre in the southern island province of Hainan. Minutes later, as the spacecraft cleared the atmosphere, the mission was declared a success by administrators at ground control on the outskirts of the capital, Beijing. The spacecraft can carry six tonnes of goods, two tonnes of fuel and can fly unmanned for three months, according to state media. It is expected to dock in two days with the Tiangong 2 space laboratory, or "Heavenly Palace 2", where two astronauts spent a month last October in China's longest-ever manned space mission. The cargo spacecraft mission will provide an "important technological basis" for the construction of China's space station, according to state media.
AI turns children’s books illustrations into nightmares
Researchers have seen hundreds of children's books through the eyes of an AI – and it was a nightmare. The team trained a deep learning algorithm to recognize illustrations by feeding it a data set of 6,468 pages from 223 books, by 24 artist. Once the AI had learned the characteristics of a specific artist, it transferred them to a new image that is sure to give children night terrors – it lit a smiling turtle on fire, engulfed a girl in flames and turned a snow covered scene bottom into an image of the apocalypse. Researchers aimed to teach a deep deep learning algorithm to recognize patterns and used children's books illustrations. The team fed the AI a data set of 6,468 pages from 223 books, by 24 artist.
Brain electric stimulation may help people create memories
Stimulating the brain with electrical signals could help people suffering from memory loss to remember new events. Researchers found deep brain stimulation with electrodes helped people who usually struggle to remember things to create new memories. The discovery could one day be used to help people suffering from conditions such as dementia and epilepsy, the researchers claimed. The researchers studied 102 patients being treated for drug-resistant epilepsy. They recorded electrical activity from electrodes implanted in the patients' brains.
Bose headphones secretly collect users' details through app, claims lawsuit
Bose is being sued for allegedly spying on customers and selling their personal data to advertisers. A lawsuit filed in federal court by Chicago resident Kyle Zak this week claims the company demonstrated a "wholesale disregard" for the privacy of consumers. Mr Zak says he downloaded the Bose Connect app after purchasing the company's QuietComfort 35 headphones, signing up by entering his name, email address and headphone serial number. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Artificial Intelligence set to transform insurance industry, but integration challenges remain: Accenture
Artificial intelligence (AI) will "significantly transform" the insurance industry in the next three years, with insurers investing in AI to empower agents, brokers and employees to enhance the customer experience with automated personalized services, faster claims handling and individual risk-based underwriting processes, according to a new report from Accenture. The Technology Vision for Insurance 2017 report, called Technology for People, released on Wednesday by the global professional services company, found that while the technology will be empowering, insurers face challenges integrating AI into their existing technology. Insurers cite issues such as data quality, privacy and infrastructure compatibility. The report is based on the insights of a technology advisory board, interviews with industry technologists and a survey of more than 550 insurance executives across 31 countries in North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Africa and South America, Accenture noted in a press release. The goal of the survey was to identify the key issues and priorities for technology adoption and investment.

He called the nuclear accident a "normal accident." Similarly, the Chernobyl accident in 1986, the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003, the 2008 financial crisis and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011 are, in fact, perfectly normal. "The philosophy of our entire portfolio, or our approach, is largely based on this DNA: human immune system," Sanjay Aurora, managing director for Asia Pacific at Darktrace, told CNBC. "How have human beings, for millions of years, thrived and survived? Almost every day, we're hit by unknown unknowns, which is the way organizations are also hit ... in terms of viruses and malware."
Thousands exposed to hackers by Wi-Fi routers
Security researchers have discovered a range of vulnerabilities affecting a range of Wi-Fi routers. Both "high-risk" and "low-risk" issues have been uncovered in more than 20 different Linksys router models, over 7,000 of which were "exposed on the internet" when the research was conducted in the fourth quarter of 2016. The vulnerabilities could allow cybercriminals to leak information about devices connected to the router, as well as overload the router itself and deny access to a user.
