Windows users mystified as antivirus accidentally cripples computers
A major gaffe has crippled Windows computers running antivirus program Webroot. The security provider issued a seriously flawed signature update on Monday, which mistakenly identified hundreds of crucial Windows files and legitimate apps as malware. It proceeded to shut them down, completely crippling users' computers in the process. Webroot customers were also unable to access Facebook, which the update had marked as a phishing site. Uber is to launch flying cars to replace its taxis. The company hopes to have people flying around on special platforms that can take off vertically and carry people to their destination, the company has said in a major press conference. The flying vehicles will be made available at a similar cost to the existing UberX service and eventually be much cheaper than owning a traditional or flying vehicle, Uber head of product Jeff Holden said. SAN FRANCISCO -- Uber is targeting 2020 for a demonstration of ride-hailing technology that will take to the skies. The on-demand car service company -- facing a leadership crisis and lawsuits over its business practices -- announced Tuesday at its Elevate Summit in Dallas that it has formed partnerships with cities and companies to develop flying cars and the infrastructure needed by machines that take off and land vertically like helicopters.

Steel production is an area that has been studied for decades, and as such the industry has remained very conservative. Despite the big data revolution beginning in the early 2000s, "old-school" industries like steel-making have largely shunned any form of data-driven applications. Fortunately, things change, and here's an example of how data analytics technologies, born within the internet industry, can be applied to an offline practice like turning pig iron into steel. When we began work with Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK), one of the world's largest steel producers and a leading steel company in Russia, a lot of time was spent looking for a challenge that if solved, could (a) positively impact business revenues, and (b) be completed in reasonable time.The challenge that was eventually uncovered and able to meet these criteria, is one well-known to all metallurgists: how much of each ferroalloy to add during steel-making process in order to ensure the required chemistry of the steel at the lowest possible cost. This chemistry is dictated by the international standards for steel – a list of required ranges for the amounts of each element in the final mix.

Welcome to the Schindler Conference Call on key figures for the First Quarter 2017. I'm here together with Erich Ammann, our CFO we will go into all financial details later during the call. As an introduction to the remark it is fair to say that we continued our successful plan of the last year as we kept our direction towards top-line growth and also higher profitability. Let's have a closer look on our highlights of the first quarter 2017 on slide two. We made further operational and strategic progress. First, we were able to confirm our growth path. Orders received increased by 5.9% in local currencies and also operating revenue rose by 3.8% in local currencies. Operating revenue was therefore within our guidance of 3% to 5% growth in 2017. Our investments into our geographic diversification mainly into our strategic markets were paying off. Second, we also continued to improve our profitability. The EBIT margin increased to 11.5% and even 11.7% before restructuring costs. Net profit stayed flat at CHF179 million due to some temporary booking losses on the ALSO exchangeable bond. Third, we made further progress in our strategic initiatives. We are on track with our globally harmonized modular product platforms, but it is still a long way to go to finalize this, and we were also able to successfully launch our new Internet of Elevator and Escalator Solutions, Schindler Ahead. Yesterday, we launched officially our new Schindler Ahead initiative and I would like to stay a little bit with that topic. As you can see on slide number 3, we will create significant customer benefits in the future. We increased the uptime of our equipment with predictive maintenance, we offer comprehensive insights about all type of information of the equipment for a better building, maintenance and management, and we generate convenience with superior customer service by interactive and personalized passenger experience. On slide four, you find the solution concept of our enhanced service offerings. There are four elements to be mentioned. First the Cube, The Cube enables machine intelligence, all relevant machine data are collected, filtered and transmitted to the cloud platform. The Cube is an intelligent device, not only a transmitter or a gateway, as we can run apps and stream multimedia content and handle emergency calls. The second topic is the cloud platform. The cloud platform creates real time insights.
Surgical theatre of the future: Connected, networked and AI-powered
Conventional operating theatres would typical consist of multiple medical devices, each operating in a silo-ed fashion and incapable of communicating with one another. But a team at Tokyo Women's Medical University (TWMU) in Japan is aiming to move away from this norm and equip the operating theatre with integrated medical equipment and robotics in order to enhance surgical precision and improve patient outcomes. The project, dubbed Smart Cyber Operating Theatre (SCOT), is funded by Japan's Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) and led by Yoshihiro Muragaki (pictured right), a professor and neurosurgeon at TWMU's Faculty of Advanced Techno-Surgery. Founded in 2001, the SCOT team started out with six surgeons and five engineers. Designed for brain tumor surgery, one aspect of SCOT comprises the monitoring and display of a patient's condition in real-time during surgery.
HipChat hacked: Users' messages 'may have been accessed' by cyber criminals
HipChat has revealed that it was targeted by hackers over the weekend. The instant-messaging service says the attackers "may have" gained access to users' names, email addresses and "hashed" passwords. Hashing passwords means scrambling them into complex sequences of characters that are designed to be difficult for hackers to crack. The first photos of the iPhone 8 might just have been leaked. The images – which are unverified, but are claimed by those sharing them to show a phone made as a prototype of the new handset – show a redesigned phone that includes many new features but takes much of its lead from the iPhone 7. The new phone is already being said by some rumour-mongers to be the most radical redesign that the iPhone has ever had, to mark its tenth anniversary. Sony's Concept N products have been sneak-peeked as future possibilities. His name is Nigel, but I'm guessing you haven't heard of him. Nigel could be Sony's answer to Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa and Samsung's Bixby, a personal digital assistant that could potentially be a competitive threat and big boost to the company. But Sony has him way under wraps. I recently paid a visit to "Sony City," in Tokyo, where the electronics giant has its corporate headquarters.
