Uber Flying Cars: Uber Wants Airborn Vehicles By 2020
Uber has traditionally been associated with its ride-hailing services, but the company wants its cars to head skyward next. Uber highlighted its plans to develop and test cars that are capable of vertically taking off and landing -- commonly referred to as VTOLs -- by 2020 at a press conference Tuesday. The ridesharing company has partnered with city officials in Dubai and Dallas for its initiative, Reuters reported. In the short-term, Uber hopes to have VTOLs that could run electrically and be quiet enough to use within cities. With flying cars, the hope for Uber is that they could both cut down on the time and cost needed to transport users from one place to another.
A Tube-and-Droplet-based Approach for Representing and Analyzing Motion Trajectories

Trajectory analysis is essential in many applications. In this paper, we address the problem of representing motion trajectories in a highly informative way, and consequently utilize it for analyzing trajectories. Our approach first leverages the complete information from given trajectories to construct a thermal transfer field which provides a context-rich way to describe the global motion pattern in a scene. Then, a 3D tube is derived which depicts an input trajectory by integrating its surrounding motion patterns contained in the thermal transfer field. The 3D tube effectively: 1) maintains the movement information of a trajectory, 2) embeds the complete contextual motion pattern around a trajectory, 3) visualizes information about a trajectory in a clear and unified way. We further introduce a droplet-based process. It derives a droplet vector from a 3D tube, so as to characterize the high-dimensional 3D tube information in a simple but effective way. Finally, we apply our tube-and-droplet representation to trajectory analysis applications including trajectory clustering, trajectory classification & abnormality detection, and 3D action recognition. Experimental comparisons with state-of-the-art algorithms demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.
Multimodal Word Distributions

Word embeddings provide point representations of words containing useful semantic information. We introduce multimodal word distributions formed from Gaussian mixtures, for multiple word meanings, entailment, and rich uncertainty information. To learn these distributions, we propose an energy-based max-margin objective. We show that the resulting approach captures uniquely expressive semantic information, and outperforms alternatives, such as word2vec skip-grams, and Gaussian embeddings, on benchmark datasets such as word similarity and entailment.
A Recurrent Neural Model with Attention for the Recognition of Chinese Implicit Discourse Relations

We introduce an attention-based Bi-LSTM for Chinese implicit discourse relations and demonstrate that modeling argument pairs as a joint sequence can outperform word order-agnostic approaches. Our model benefits from a partial sampling scheme and is conceptually simple, yet achieves state-of-the-art performance on the Chinese Discourse Treebank. We also visualize its attention activity to illustrate the model's ability to selectively focus on the relevant parts of an input sequence.

The announcement at the company's inaugural Elevate Summit in Dallas on Tuesday marks Uber's latest push to transform urban transportation, following numerous controversial programs that have led to high-profile conflicts with governments across the globe. Many questions remain about how flying cars will work and how cities will regulate the technology and on-demand systems. The San Francisco-based company has a long history of openly flouting regulations and defying existing laws that control the taxi industry and govern the testing of autonomous vehicles.

With nearly 400 breeds spanning almost every corner of the planet, dogs have long followed man on his travels. In a bid to piece together the complex evolution of dogs, researchers have looked at the genetic sequences of 161 modern breeds. The resulting map unearths new evidence that dogs travelled with humans across the Bering land bridge 15,000 years ago, and will likely help researchers identify disease-causing genes in both dogs and humans.
