Learning Correspondence Structures for Person Re-identification

This paper addresses the problem of handling spatial misalignments due to camera-view changes or human-pose variations in person re-identification. We first introduce a boosting-based approach to learn a correspondence structure which indicates the patch-wise matching probabilities between images from a target camera pair. The learned correspondence structure can not only capture the spatial correspondence pattern between cameras but also handle the viewpoint or human-pose variation in individual images. We further introduce a global constraint-based matching process. It integrates a global matching constraint over the learned correspondence structure to exclude cross-view misalignments during the image patch matching process, hence achieving a more reliable matching score between images. Finally, we also extend our approach by introducing a multi-structure scheme, which learns a set of local correspondence structures to capture the spatial correspondence sub-patterns between a camera pair, so as to handle the spatial misalignments between individual images in a more precise way. Experimental results on various datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

The AI that could decode what dolphins say
Dolphins are known to be highly intelligent creatures, and have even been found to construct'sentences' from patterns of clicks and pulses to communicate with each other. And, using artificial intelligence, researchers are now hoping to figure out what they're talking about. Researchers in Sweden are set to begin creating a dolphin-language dictionary using technology from language-analysis startup Gavagai AB – and, it could one day allow humans to communicate with the animals. The program launched by researchers at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Gavagai AB plan to monitor captive bottlenose dolphins at a wildlife park. The language-analysis software has already proven capable in 40 human languages. And, it's hoped that the artificial intelligence system can similarly decode the dolphins' 'dictionary.'
Drone strike that killed Reyaad Khan 'not transparent'
British politicians who examined the details of a drone strike which killed a British man in Syria said they were disappointed by the government's lack of transparency during investigations. On August 21, 2015, the UK conducted a drone strike in Raqqa for the first time outside the traditional theatre of war, killing 21-year-old British national Reyaad Khan, a suspected fighter with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS), and two other people. "We are in no doubt that Reyaad Khan posed a very serious threat to the UK," the Intelligence and Security Committee in the UK said in a report on Wednesday. "There is nevertheless a question as to how the threat is quantified and in this instance whether the actions of Khan and his associates amounted to an'armed attack' against the UK or Iraq - which is clearly a subjective assessment," the committee said. "The [government's] failure to provide what we consider to be relevant documents is profoundly disappointing," the report added.

It will all be part of a brave new world of the not-so-distant future, in which innovative smart machines, rather than being the undoing of people - as some technophobes have long feared - actually enhance humans. Many experts say technology will allow people to take on tasks they might only have dreamed of in the past. "Super-intelligence should give us superhuman abilities," said Tom Gruber, head of the team responsible for Apple's Siri digital assistant, during an on-stage talk at the prestigious TED Conference in Vancouver. "Artificial intelligence can enable partnerships where each human on the team is doing what they do best," he told the popular technology conference. Gruber, a co-creator of Siri and artificial intelligence research at Apple, told of being drawn to the field three decades ago by the potential for technology to meet people's needs.
Amazon's new AI assistant will watch you in your home – but also rate your outfits
Amazon has just unveiled the Echo Look, the latest addition to its range of voice-enabled assistants. Unlike its predecessors, the Look is equipped with a camera, which means it can watch, as well as listen to, its users. It sounds potentially creepy, but the company is marketing the Echo Look as a sort of fashion assistant, and says the device can be used to help you choose an outfit. "Get a live view in the Echo Look app or ask Alexa to take a short video so you can see yourself from every angle," says Amazon. You can also get it to take a full-body picture of you by saying "Alexa, take a picture".

A true lie is a lie that becomes true when announced. In a logic of announcements, where the announcing agent is not modelled, a true lie is a formula (that is false and) that becomes true when announced. We investigate true lies and other types of interaction between announced formulas, their preconditions and their postconditions, in the setting of Gerbrandy's logic of believed announcements, wherein agents may have or obtain incorrect beliefs. Our results are on the satisfiability and validity of instantiations of these semantically defined categories, on iterated announcements, including arbitrarily often iterated announcements, and on syntactic characterization. We close with results for iterated announcements in the logic of knowledge (instead of belief), and for lying as private announcements (instead of public announcements) to different agents. Detailed examples illustrate our lying concepts.
Artificial Intelligence Could Help Diagnose Tuberculosis
Artificial intelligence models may be the new tool to help screen and evaluate efforts in tuberculosis-prevalent areas that often are plagued by limited access to radiologists. In TB-prone areas, there is a lack of trained radiologists qualified to screen and diagnose TB, which can be done using chest imaging techniques. However, the researchers used deep learning, a type of artificial intelligence that allows computers to complete tasks based on existing relationships of data. They modeled a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) after brain structure to employ multiple hidden layers and patterns to classify images. "There is a tremendous interest in artificial intelligence, both inside and outside the field of medicine," Dr. Paras Lakhani, study co-author and assistant professor of Radiology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) in Philadelphia, said in a statement.
