An accelerating consumer electronics sector and the mass penetration of broadband internet have led us into a new era of chaotic innovation and fraught business model evolution. And somewhere in the middle of all this, people are making and playing games. How do those people keep up?

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US has announced the first move in its efforts to kill off net neutrality. Ajit Pai, who was appointed chairman of the FCC by President Trump, wants to remove many of the regulations designed to keep broadband providers in check, protect consumers and encourage companies to innovate. Primark shoppers have been warned to stay away from a fake £100 discount voucher circulating on Facebook this week. The Facebook post claims that Primark is giving away the coupons as part of the discount retailer's anniversary celebrations. It encourages social media users to click on a link and participate as instructed. However experts have warned that anyone who does so is likely to have their personal information stolen and their friends are likely to be spammed in the process. Hoax Slayers, a website which aims to debunk email and internet hoaxes, first reported the scam in January this year, but the voucher reappeared on Facebook this week.

Microsoft has advised Windows 10 users against downloading the Creators Update before their computers become eligible for it. The company released the new software two weeks ago, but has decided to roll it out to users in stages, partly because it doesn't want to overwhelm its servers. In the history of London's Underground rail network, the underground fire hazard incident of 1987 at the King's cross station was one the biggest disasters. It claimed 31 lives and also severely scarred the reputation of London Underground. After multiple inquiries, it was concluded that the fire had started because someone dropped a lit match onto a wooden escalator. But how did such a trivial incident snowball into a full-blown disaster? Pulitzer prize-winning author and journalist Charles Duhigg analyzed this question in his international bestseller The Power of Habit.

In the brightly lit robotics workshop at Abyss Creations' factory in San Marcos, California, a life-size humanoid was dangling from a stand, hooked between her shoulder blades. Harmony is a prototype, a robotic version of the company's hyper-realistic silicone sex toy, the RealDoll. The Realbotix room where she was assembled was lined with varnished pine surfaces covered with wires and circuit boards, and a 3D printer whirred in the corner, spitting out tiny, intricate parts that will be inserted beneath her PVC skull. Her hazel eyes darted between me and her creator, Matt McMullen, as he described her accomplishments. Harmony smiles, blinks and frowns. She can hold a conversation, tell jokes and quote Shakespeare. She'll remember your birthday, McMullen told me, what you like to eat, and the names of your brothers and sisters. She can hold a conversation about music, movies and books. And of course, Harmony will have sex with you whenever you want. Harmony is the culmination of 20 years' work making sex dolls, and five years of robot research and development. After his team had made their silicone and steel dolls as "human" as they could, the way ahead began to feel inevitable, irresistible: they would animate them, giving them personality and bringing them to life. McMullen had toyed with animatronics for years.

This is the first post in an intended series on what is the current state of Artificial Intelligence capabilities, and what we can expect in the relative short term. I will be at odds with the more outlandish claims that are circulating in the press, and amongst what I consider an alarmist group that includes people in the AI field and outside of it. In this post I start to introduce some of the key components of my future arguments, as well as show how different any AI system might be from us humans. Some may recognize the title of this post as an homage to the 1974 paper by Thomas Nagel, "What Is It Like to Be a Bat?". Two more recent books, one from 2009 by Alexandra Horowitz on dogs, and one from 2016 by Peter Godfrey-Smith on octopuses also pay homage to Nagel's paper each with a section of a chapter titled "What it is like", and "What It's Like", respectively, giving affirmative responses to their own questions about what is it like to be a dog, or an octopus.

The country is becoming a hub for global AI development. Five priorities can help China harness AI for productivity growth and prepare for the societal shifts it may unleash. Artificial intelligence, or the idea that computer systems can perform functions typically associated with the human mind, has gone from futuristic speculation to present-day reality. A new discussion paper from the McKinsey Global Institute, originally presented at the 2017 China Development Forum, explores AI's potential to fuel China's productivity growth--and to disrupt the nation's workforce. Where computer systems once had to be programmed to execute rigidly defined tasks, they can now be given a generalized strategy for learning, enabling them to adapt to new data inputs without being explicitly reprogrammed.

When Lori Beer, the recently-installed chief information officer of J.P. Morgan's corporate and investment bank, started out in 1989, technology was much more of a man's world than it is today. More often than not, she was the solitary woman surrounded by team of male nerds. Fitting in, she says, is not the best thing to do. "My advice would be to stop trying to be like one of the guys," she says. "I spent years being the only woman on predominantly male technology teams, but the best thing you can do as a woman in technology is to stay focused on the value you can bring as an individual. Tech teams need diversity of perspective."
