The Walls Have Eyes, and They're Watching How You Walk

A smart home with walls capable of monitoring each person's health without wearable fitness trackers just got a step closer. A research group based primarily at MIT has shown how a picture-size wall sensor can detect the walking speed and stride length of people based on how their bodies interfere with radio signals. The WiGait system works by transmitting low-power radio signals and analyzing how those radio signals reflect off of people's bodies within a radius of 9 to 12 meters. It can also detect the walking patterns of multiple people and works across physical barriers such as walls within a home. According to its inventors, this "invisible" sensor could combined with wearable devices used to track other fitness measures--especially for older people with chronic conditions such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.

This March, a truck pulled onto a runway in Oregon, towing a miniature plane for a test flight. At 650 pounds, the plane was too large to be a toy, but too small to fit a pilot. That's because the ArcticShark isn't a toy, and it doesn't need a pilot. Department of Energy scientists at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory commissioned its design in order to fly over the Alaska North Slope to take data in the Arctic atmosphere. As it flies through the air at a modest 75 miles per hour, the drone will measure the size of atmospheric particles, levels of infrared radiation, humidity, wind direction, and more--measurements that will help scientists understand basic atmospheric processes like how clouds form, which they could eventually apply to climate models.

The Galaxy S8 is shipping all over the world, people are raving about it, and it's breaking all sorts of sales records. Samsung's AI assistant Bixby wasn't quite ready to launch when the Galaxy S8 did, so Samsung held back its biggest feature, voice commands, with a vague promise that it will launch "later this spring." But we could be getting to know Bixby sooner than we think. Samsung has launched the voice component of Bixby in its home country of South Korea, a clear signal that the company is hard at work at perfecting its voice recognition engine. The plan has always been for Korean language support to launch first followed by English.


Google India Set to Unveil Advances in Machine Learning For Indian Languages

Aiming to bring a billion people online and make the web more useful for them, Google India is slated to unveil new products on advancement in machine learning for the Indian languages, the company said on Friday. In an event to be organised here on April 25, Google will also share findings from a new report by Google and KPMG India, titled "Indian Languages-Defining India's Internet". Rajan Anandan, Vice President, SouthEast Asia and India, Google, will address the event, the company said in a statement. Also read: Google'Smart Display Campaign' to Help Advertisers Increase Customer Reach In a bid to help Bengali speakers discover new information quickly, Google earlier this year announced the introduction of Knowledge Graph in the Bengali language on Google Search. The Knowledge Graph enables users to search for things, people or places that Google knows about -- landmarks, celebrities, cities, sports teams, buildings, geographical features, movies, celestial objects, works of art and more.

The new wave of artificial intelligence applications, fueled by a combination of big data and processing capabilities, have garnered over $15B in funding to AI startups in just the last 5 years. Even as investors employ their own due diligence to gauge the "AI-ness" of a startup, new companies are continuing to enter the space at an unprecedented rate. As one measure of internal R&D efforts of companies and innovation in the space, we analyzed the patent application activity of startups on our AI list. We analyzed over 1,150 active AI startups (that have not exited) and found that only 21% of the startups applied for a US patent since 2009 (note: there is a lag in publishing applications, so patent data from 2014 to present is still processing). Only 11% have been granted at least one patent in the United States since 2009.

Ever since the United States retired its space shuttle fleet in 2011, NASA astronauts have had to hitch rides to the International Space Station (ISS) in Russian Soyuz spaceships -- paying Russian space agency Roscosmos for the privilege. The plan is for NASA to soon switch over sometime soon to using its own rockets -- built by SpaceX and Boeing (NYSE:BA) and Lockheed Martin's (NYSE:LMT) United Launch Alliance joint venture -- but it remains an open question when these companies will have their spacecraft ready for use. In the meantime, American astronauts must continue to fork over $82 million a seat in payment for rides aboard Soyuz. And what is Russia doing with all that money, you ask?
