When the Tokyo Marathon was held on Feb. 26, major security firm Secom Co. lifted a balloon equipped with cameras from a building near the finish line in front of JR Tokyo Station and deployed vehicles equipped with a radar system that can detect drones. Diagnosing disease is one of the more labor-intensive aspects of the healthcare system. It also happens to be one that is particularly well-suited to being performed by machine learning algorithms. While work in this area is in its early stages, the technology is evolving rapidly and appears poised to transform diagnostic medicine. Thanks largely to the huge volumes of data collected from patients, medical diagnostics is an ideal domain for machine learning. Much of the diagnostic data is image-based, such as X-rays, MRI scans, and ultrasound imagery, but can also include things like genomic profiles, epidemiological data, blood tests, biopsy results, and even medical research papers.

Mark Zuckerberg has announced a range of new measures designed to help Facebook remove unacceptable content more quickly. The social network has come under heavy fire over recent weeks, after videos of two murders were uploaded to the site and watched by hundreds of thousands of users before eventually being taken down. One of those videos, which showed an 11-month-old child being killed, was on the site for around 24 hours before moderators acted. The other, which showed the murder of Robert Godwin Snr., was only reported by a user over an hour and a half after it was uploaded. A wildfire broke out over the weekend in an uninhabited portion of Japan's Fukushima prefecture, sparking concerns that the blaze might spread airborne radiation. The fire started on Mount Juman in Namie, where radiation has remained high enough since the 2011 disaster for officials to continue declaring it a "difficult-to-return zone." Eight helicopters from Fukushima, Miyagi and Gunma prefectures were dispatched to the site, Japanese newspaper the Mainichi reported Monday. When those helicopters couldn't stop the flames, local officials called in the Ground Self-Defense Force, a branch of the Japanese military, to help. The fire was likely started by lightning in the uninhabited region, the Mainichi reported.

Accenture has launched Million Meals' project with NGO Akshaya Patra to increase the number of midday meals served to children in state-run schools. Disruptive technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) will enable organisations to deliver a million midday meals to schoolchildren in India, said a top official of software major Accenture. "We have applied AI, IoT and block-chain to exponentially increase the number of midday meals served to children in state-run schools under'Million Meals' project with NGO Akshaya Patra," said Accenture Labs Managing Director Sanjay Podder in a statement. Block-chain is a distributed database that compiles a growing list of ordered records called blocks. The US-based Accenture collaborated with the city-based Akshaya Patra Foundation, which operates the government-funded MidDay Meal Scheme in state-run and state-aided schools, in implementing the novel project with new IT products and solutions.
