He was born with juvenile retinoschisis, an inherited condition that caused his retinas to disintegrate completely by his freshman year of high school. Unable to play the ball games at which his father and his brothers excelled, he took to climbing after being introduced to it at a summer camp for the blind. He learned to pat the rock face with his hands or tap it with an ice axe to find his next hold, following the sound of a small bell worn by a guide, who also described the terrain ahead. With this technique, he has summited the tallest peaks on all seven continents.
'Prey' is video games' latest sci-fi epic
It may share the same name, but the video game Prey has little in common with its 2006 predecessor. Publisher Bethesda Softworks has just launched Prey, a science-fiction epic carrying the brand the video game publisher's parent company, ZeniMax Media, acquired nearly eight years ago. The original Prey, which publisher 2K Games launched in 2006, starred Native American protagonist Tommy, who embarks on a quest to stop aliens from destroying Earth after he's abducted along with his girlfriend and his grandfather. Players explored a spaceship with living flesh-like interiors and warp holes used to navigate. The 2017 Prey for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One features Morgan Yu, a participant in experiments done aboard the space station Talos I.
Parasitic robot controls turtle it's riding by giving it snacks
In preparation for becoming humanity's overlords, robots have started controlling turtles. By first getting the reptiles to associate a red light with food, the shell-attached robots can dictate where the turtle moves around a tank, creating a rather unusual parasitic relationship. Even with the huge progress made in recent years, robots still have some serious limitations. Making their motion robust enough to survive the rigours of daily life is an ongoing battle, as is the puzzle of providing them with enough energy to avoid spending hours recharging. Nature, on the other hand, can do this easily.
Deep, Deep Trouble
I keep changing my opinion on a daily basis, and I cannot seem to settle on one solid view of this puzzle. No, I am not talking about world politics or the current U.S. president, but rather something far more critical to humankind, and more specifically to our existence and work as engineers and researchers. I am talking about…deep learning. While you might find the above statement rather bombastic and overstated, deep learning indeed raises several critical questions we must address. In the following paragraphs, I hope to expose one key conflict related to the emergence of this field, which is relevant to researchers in the image processing community.

Every month, the media reported another major breach, many of which had an impact at the corporate and even state level. We're all familiar with Yahoo!'s security issues, which were partially caused by long-standing compromises of their networks that no one within the company had any knowledge of. At our company, we see the aftermath of this type of vulnerability all the time. Our clients are directly affected -- many of the publishers and e-commerce merchants who use our infrastructure use Cloudflare. Many of them host WordPress sites and have had to deal with a slew of vulnerabilities in WordPress's API and its plugins.
Apple Maps: After a disastrous start, is it worth using yet?
After a start rockier than most of the terrain it covered, Apple's Maps app has changed out of all recognition. Is it worth using now? When Apple Maps replaced Google Maps as the iPhone's default mapping app in autumn 2012, it wasn't an unqualified success. Though the maps themselves were attractive, and extra features like Flyover with indepth 3D renders were well-liked, there were lots of problems. A farm called Airfield in Ireland was labelled as an airport, leading to fears of planes trying to land there.
How P&G and American Express Are Approaching AI
There is a tendency with any new technology to believe that it requires new management approaches, new organizational structures, and entirely new personnel. That impression is widespread with cognitive technologies -- which comprises a range of approaches in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and deep learning. Some have argued for the creation of "chief cognitive officer" roles, and certainly many firms are rushing to hire experts with deep learning expertise. "New and different" is the ethos of the day. But we believe that successful firms can treat cognitive technologies as an opportunity to evolve or grow from previous work.

Artificial Intelligence must be the most overused word these days! You will be hard put to find any edition of a newspaper on any day, which does not have at least one reference to AI. Yet interestingly, this is the Second Coming of the technology that is vaguely defined as human-like intelligence displayed by machines and was first mooted in the US at a conference in 1956. Computers were soon winning at checkers, solving word problems in algebra, proving logical theorems and speaking English. The originators of the AI idea including its Bhishma Pitamaha, Marvin Minsky, claimed that Machines would be capable, within twenty years, of doing any work a Man can do.
The AI chatbot capable of understanding emotions
A future where machines can understand human emotional responses has moved one step closer. Scientists have created an AI chatbot that uses machine learning to better understand the links between language and how we feel. And this could lead to the creation of ever smarter home assistants like Siri and Alexa, as well as laying the foundations for emotionally engaging robots. The Emotional Chatting Machine (ECM) was developed by a team of Chinese researchers. Their aim was to create an AI bot capable of replying to chat messages with an appropriate emotional reaction.
