Chatbots expected to cut business costs by $8 billion by 2022
Chatbots could help trim business costs by more than $8 billion per year by 2022, according to new research which is anticipating a surge in automated customer service programs as companies move to embrace artificial intelligence (AI). Health care and banking, industries which manage large volumes of human interaction, are set to benefit most from the new technology, the study published Tuesday from analysis firm Juniper Research suggests. It predicts that between three-quarters and 90 percent of queries in these areas will be dealt with by "chatbots" within the next five years, resulting in cost savings of up to $0.70 per interaction. "We believe that health care and banking providers using bots can expect average time savings of just over 4 minutes per enquiry, equating to average cost savings in the range of $0.50-$0.70 per interaction," the research company said. Chatbots currently account for business cost savings of $20 million globally, but their ability to deal comprehensively with human problems is limited.

Amazon Echo Show brings chatty Alexa to a two-way, video touchscreen
Amazon wants Alexa to be able to show as well as tell. On Tuesday, the Internet's powerhouse retailer announced the aptly named Echo Show, a new speaker where Amazon's increasingly popular digital assistant can lend a voice--and helping hand. As with the original Echo speaker where Alexa got its start, Echo Show contains an array of microphones that are always listening for the "Alexa" wake word. What sets Echo Show apart is the addition of a 7-inch color touch screen, coupled with a front facing (5-megapixel) camera. The product, which comes in black or white, resembles an old kitchen counter-top TV set.
Korea is building a 'city' for self-driving cars
South Korea will soon open an 88 acre facility with everything an autonomous car might encounter, including expressways, parking areas and bus-only lanes, according to the Korea Business Times. First announced last year, it will be the world's largest, dwarfing Michigan's 32-acre Mcity facility that it's reportedly based on. The idea is to let companies test self-driving tech in a repeatable way, without the hard-to-get permits normally required to test vehicles on Korea's public roads. South Korea produces some of the world's most popular cars, but is well behind other nations in allowing self-driving vehicles on its streets. Despite that, it recently announced the ambitious goal to produce Level 3 vehicles (fully autonomous with a driver backup) by 2020.

ServiceNow taps AI to automate everyday workflows
ServiceNow is bringing enhanced machine-learning capabilities to its Now Platform for business process automation to help customers prevent outages, automatically route service requests, and predict and benchmark IT performance. The AI capabilities will be offered through the upcoming Intelligent Automation Engine, announced at the company's Knowledge conference in Orlando Tuesday. The move strengthens ServiceNow's base in IT management while making further inroads into other areas of the enterprise. The machine-learning capabilities will be brought into ServiceNow's cloud services for security, customer service, and HR. The Intelligent Automation Engine's algorithms are based on technology the company acquired through its purchase of DxContinuum in January.
US 'likely' to expand electronics ban to UK flights
The US is considering expanding its electronics ban to all flights departing UK and European airports, according to a new report. Passengers travelling to the US would not be able to board a US-bound plane carrying any electronics larger than a mobile phone. Laptops, tablets and cameras would instead need to be checked-in ahead of flights and stored in the cargo hold. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Million-Dollar Prize Hints at How Machine Learning May Someday Spot Cancer
A contest aimed at automating the detection of lung cancer shows how machine learning may be poised to overhaul medical imaging. The challenge offered $1 million in prizes for the algorithms that most accurately identified signs of lung cancer in low-dose computed tomography images. The winning algorithms won't necessarily be adopted by clinicians, but they could inspire algorithmic innovations that find their way into medical imaging. Low-dose CT scans have shown great potential in recent years for detecting lung cancer earlier. They use less radiation and do not require a contrast dye to be injected into the body.
Siri, Who Is Terry Winograd?
A version of this article appeared in the Spring 2017 issue of strategy business. On the Stanford University campus, you could practically throw a rock and hit 100 graduate students who are building apps that enable people to communicate more effectively. But Terry Winograd is particularly enthusiastic about the app one of his graduate students, Catalin Voss, is working on. Voss, a native of Germany who completed his bachelor's and master's degrees last June at the age of 21, is working on an app that deploys Google Glass, linked to a smartphone, to help autistic children recognize human emotions through facial expressions. Venture capitalists weren't interested, even though Voss had created and sold a startup that used eye-tracking technology to monitor attentiveness to a Toyota subsidiary while still a freshman. But Terry Winograd was interested. "It runs, it has AI [artificial intelligence]," says Winograd, who 20-odd years ago advised another graduate student on the then nascent field of searching the World Wide Web. "It's at a stage where we've actually put 30 devices into homes. Our goal is to have 100 in the trial." Voss says his objective is to build a medical product that insurers will be willing to pay for. "We want to prove the investors wrong, who didn't believe in it, and build an aid for people with autism, and other mental disorders as well," he says. "We believe we've built a fairly holistic system for mental health."

In the fall of 2016, a pop song was released in Japan. "Daddy's Car," derivative of a Beatles tune, had a soothing beat and vaguely uplifting lyrics: "Good day sunshine in the backseat car / I wish that road could never stop." The ditty was distinctive for its authorship. Sony's Computer Science Laboratories in Paris produced the song, which was written by an artificial intelligence (AI) system called Flow Machines. The melody and harmony were composed by AI, and a human musician mixed the sound and wrote lyrics for the track. AI -- the new set of technologies that perform tasks that require human intelligence, such as speech recognition, decision making, and learning -- is rapidly working its way into business operations within many global industries. Some members of the entertainment and media (E&M) industry have downplayed its potential. After all, these are creative industries in which both the germ of the business and the value added to it stem from the contribution of human ingenuity and people exchanging ideas. The most successful E&M products and services rely on connecting creative content, brands, and experiences with audiences.
