Tag Team Inc has spent the last six years coming up with its own laser tag technologies to upgrade the existing game, which involves teams of players armed with guns that fire infrared beams. The players wear targets that are sensitive to infrared and have to run around within an arena earning points by shooting other players while avoiding being hit themselves. UP to S$150 million will be committed to AI.SG, a new national programme that seeks to boost Singapore's capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI). The National Research Foundation (NRF) will invest the amount over the next five years. Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim said on Wednesday that AI and data science are among key frontier technologies the Singapore government will harness as part of its "enhanced growth strategy for the digital economy". Desperate to overcome the nation's growing shortage of labor, midsized companies are planning to buy robots and other equipment to automate a wide range of tasks, including manufacturing, earthmoving and hotel room service. According to a Bank of Japan survey, companies with share capital of ¥100 million to ¥1 billion plan to boost investment in the fiscal year that started in April by 17.5 percent, the highest level on record. It is unclear how much of that is being spent on automation but companies selling such equipment say their order books are growing and the government says it sees a larger proportion of investment being dedicated to increasing efficiency. Revenue at many robot-makers also rose in the January-March period for the first time in several quarters. "The share of capital expenditure devoted to becoming more efficient is increasing because of the shortage of workers," said Seiichiro Inoue, a director at the industrial policy bureau of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Waymo, the former self-driving project of Google, now part of the parent company Alphabet, and ride-hailing service Lyft have forged a partnership to work together on self-driving technology. The two companies will jointly test autonomous cars on the road, and the development will likely challenge Uber, Lyft's rival and currently the world's largest ride-hailing company. The purpose of the collaboration is to commercialize autonomous driving technology and make it mainstream, starting with pilot projects and product development efforts, according to two sources familiar with the agreement who spoke to the New York Times. While the details were not officially disclosed, both companies confirmed the deal. In a statement emailed to news outlets, including Bloomberg, a Lyft spokesperson said: "Waymo holds today's best self-driving technology, and collaborating with them will accelerate our shared vision of improving lives with the world's best transportation."

Andrew Ng is leaving Baidu after three years as it chief scientist in what is expected to be a huge setback for the Chinese tech group's artificial intelligence efforts. The departure is the second instance of a high-profile foreign hire leaving a Chinese company this year. Ng announced on Wednesday that he will be leaving the firm in April via a post on Medium. The departure could prove a significant blow to Baidu which is increasingly focused on AI. Earlier this year CEO Robin Li described the technology as the search giant's "key strategic focus for the next decade". The firm also scrapped its medical department to focus further on AI last month.
