The man who saved the world from the hack that took down the NHS didn't pass his IT GCSE. Marcus Hutchins, who accidentally discovered a kill switch that helped shut down the WannaCry virus as it spread around the world, doesn't have the most basic IT qualification. And it's all because his teachers thought he was a hacker. The accidental hero's problems began when he was hauled into the head teacher's office at school and told to explain why the network was down. He couldn't and so was blamed for having hacked into the network – something that despite his claims not to have done anything, led to him being suspended.
Netflix app blocked on 'altered' Android smartphones
Netflix could be about to stop working on millions of Android smartphones, thanks to a new update. The streaming company recently started rolling out Version 5 of its app, which is designed to protect Netflix from potential content pirates. However, the update is also likely to unfairly punish plenty more users who have no such intentions. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Fact or Fallacy: Could Artificial Intelligence Replace Doctors?
Much discussion and debate surround the topic of physicians and the use of artificial intelligence. The notion that AI could ever fully replace a doctor is not a completely absurd one -- there are many jobs, including white-collar professions, that eventually will be replaced by automation and various levels of machine-learning technology. Certainly, from a pragmatic perspective, it is interesting to consider the possibility of a physician who never needs to eat, never tires, can read thousands of pages of new research every day, can record and remember every experience and can even communicate in multiple languages. In a recent Harvard Business Review article, authors Richard Susskind, chairman of the advisory board of the Oxford Internet Institute, and his son Daniel, an economics fellow at the University of Oxford's Balliol College, say that AI will not only support physicians in their work, but also ultimately replace them. The argument that technology cannot be empathic is moot, they argue, and many aspects of professional work do not require compassion.
Love to Move: Chair-based gymnastics scheme boost for those with dementia
A new chair-based gymnastics exercise programme has significant benefits for people with dementia, says a report. More than 150 people have taken part in the Love to Move scheme run by the British Gymnastics Foundation (BGF). And research by Age UK found the scheme to have "demonstrable benefits in the physical, emotional and cognitive aspects of older people". The organisers now aim to train more people to deliver the programme and make it more widely available. "This age and dementia-friendly programme is astonishing people with its life-changing benefits," said BGF manager Patrick Bonner.

HTC unveils 'squeezable' flagship U11 phone
HTC has revealed its newest smartphone, which can be squeezed in order to take selfies and launch other apps. The tech giant's new U11 device houses technology called Edge Sense, based around sensors built into the side of the device that respond to being squeezed. The Taiwanese manufacturer has also become the first to include support for both the Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa smart virtual assistants. It also works when the phone is wet and if the user if wearing gloves, HTC said, and it will also support voice dictation for messages.
Apple quietly buys Lattice Data as arms race against other tech giants continues
Apple (AAPL) is looking to stay ahead of the artificial intelligence development curve with the purchase of Lattice Data, a company that uses AI technology to turn so-called "dark" data into more usable data sets The deal closed a couple of weeks ago at $200 million, according to a report from TechCrunch. On Sunday, Apple issued a generic statement on the deal that said it "buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans." Founded in 2015, Lattice Data claims that its work is "human-caliber quality at machine-caliber scale." As part of the deal, about 20 engineers from Lattice Data are now working at Apple. This is a common practice in the tech sphere.
Japan to use AI in patent screening GovInsider
The Japan Patent Office is planning on using artificial intelligence in the processing of patents, it was reported. AI will help to automate "cumbersome" tasks in patent, trademark and design applications, such as literature reviews. The office hopes to begin using this technology to automate 20 tasks by 2018, according to a Nikkei Asian Review report. In this context, AI will be able to search through lots of files and documents to check if a piece of technology or intellectual property has already been patented. It will also be able to classify patents by field, according to the report. Furthermore, image recognition technology will be able to verify trademark applications against previously registered images and logos.

Facebook to launch ParlAI, a testing ground for AI and bots
Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) today announced plans to launch a testing environment in which AI researchers and bot makers can share and iterate upon each other's work. While the initial focus is on open-sourcing the dialogue necessary to train machines to carry on conversations, other research on ParlAI will focus on computer vision and fields of AI beyond the natural language understanding required for this task. The combination of smarts from multiple bots and bot-to-bot communication will also be part of research carried out on ParlAI.
