While the overall physical retail market has struggled, consumer-electronics sales have been booming, and you can largely thank Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) for that. The online giant, which passed Wal-Mart as the No. 2 electronics retailer in 2016, was expected to pass Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) for the top spot, according to Quartz. To put Amazon's impact into perspective, the company accounted for 90% of the $5.6 billion growth the consumer-electronics industry in 2015, according to an analyst note from Deutsche Bank sent in June 2016. Amazon is absolutely a must-buy in this space, but so are Best Buy and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). Best Buy is kind of the last man standing when it comes to traditional electronis retailers on a national level.

Earlier this month, computer-security firm Trend Micro, in collaboration with researchers at Polytechnic University of Milan, released a report titled, "Rogue Robots." Rather, they were exploring how malevolent hackers might compromise various kinds of industrial robots, whose number is expected to reach 2.6 million units worldwide by 2019. The dangers of industrial robots to factory workers have long been well appreciated, which is why most of these machines operate in cages designed to keep people out of harm's way. But increasingly industrial robots are being designed to work alongside human workers, and such collaborative robots, or cobots, could present unique safety issues should their software be compromised. The threats that a hacked industrial robot represent go beyond safety concerns, though.

The Partnership on AI adds Intel, Salesforce and others as it formalizes Grand Challenges and work groups

Intel, Salesforce, eBay, Sony, SAP, McKinsey & Company, Zalando and Cogitai are joining the Partnership on AI, a collection of companies and non-profits that have committed to sharing best practices and communicating openly about the benefits and risks of artificial intelligence research. The new members will be working alongside existing partners that include Facebook, Amazon, Google, IBM, Microsoft and Apple. Collectively, the partners will be hosting a series of AI Grand Challenges to incentivize researchers to contribute to key roadblocks in the field and to address some of the social and societal ramifications of artificial intelligence research. The group is also announcing a best paper award for the greatest contribution to "AI, People, and Society," to aid in addressing a similar goal. In addition to the paper awards and challenges, the Partnership on AI will also be establishing topic and sector-specific work groups to make good on the group's promise to generate a list of best practices for researchers. The success of these projects depends on being able to build a community around the partnership, independent from larger partners.
