They say healthcare is a field that is not very rules based and a successful doctor is the one who leverages his/her experience to deal with complex and unseen cases. However, there are many low hanging fruits that are already being plucked by AI.

The driver's seat may be on the left side, but it has long rested at the center of the way cars are designed. The basic interior setup derives from that of the horse-drawn carriage, with ready access to acceleration, steering, and braking systems, 360-degree visibility, and the necessary sightlines over the power source in front. The forces reshaping the nature of transportation are conspiring to shift that focus away from the driver--first toward the rear row, and eventually toward a kind of vehicle that defies conventions like front and back seats. As traffic increases and commute times extend, consumers with money to spend (especially in China) are hiring chauffeurs and retiring to the back seat. Look, for example, at the introduction into the American market of long-wheelbase, rear-seat biased vehicles like the BMW 5-Series GranTurismo or the Volvo S60 Inscription, originally developed for Chinese buyers. The booming ridehailing industry brings the same backseat luxury to the masses, and so automakers are creating vehicles with users other than the driver in mind.

Sony Corp. is betting on self-driving cars as way to boost its semiconductor business and ensure sustainable growth, given the volatility in the smartphone market. The electronics giant has developed a highly sensitive CMOS image sensor for automotive cameras to more precisely interpret signals from traffic lights and tail lamps that use light-emitting diodes. Automotive cameras that respond to LED signaling are facing growing demand because cameras based on conventional sensors are less accurate. Sony's new CMOS sensor is capable of capturing high-quality images in a wide dynamic range, even in situations with striking contrast, such as when cars enter or exit tunnels in daylight, the company says. Sony plans to begin mass production of the new CMOS sensor next March.

Technology / What countries are investing in robots? A recent study by Redwood Software and the Centre for Economic and Business Research (Cebr) has focused on the impact of robotics automation on economic development across OECD countries, including the UK and the US. How does UK robotics investment compare to other countries? The report found that the UK has a much smaller robotics investment/GDP share in comparison to Japan, Germany and the US. Expressed in 2015 PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) terms, robotics investment in the US was $86billion in 2015, approximately 62 times that of the UK, recovering strongly from less than $30billion during the recession in 2009.
