Japan's 'Superhuman' sports games meld high-tech and athletics

When it comes to culture and entertainment, Japan has a rich history spanning from ancient legends and sports to modern manga and video games. Now a new generation of inventors is drawing on this culture to create sports with a 21st-century twist -- helping players feel "superhuman" through technology or other special equipment. The Superhuman Sports Society, a Tokyo-based group of researchers and game designers, has certified 12 new sports since its launch in 2015, including Hado, or Wave Motion in English. In Hado, players in head-mounted augmented-reality displays and armband sensors dodge waves of light as they fire energy balls at each other in a virtual arena. The game is similar to the action seen in the "Dragon Ball Z" manga-anime franchise and "Street Fighter" video games.


Revamped AlphaGo Wins First Game Against Chinese Go Grandmaster

In the first game of his match with AlphaGo--the Go-playing machine built by researchers at Google's DeepMind lab--Chinese grandmaster Ke Jie opened with a move lifted straight from the arsenal of this artificially intelligent machine. He aimed to beat AlphaGo with its own unusual style of play. But the ploy didn't quite work as the 19-year-old grandmaster planned. After a four hours and fifteen minutes of play, Ke Jie resigned, and AlphaGo grabbed a 1-0 lead in this best-of-three match. Last year, in South Korea, AlphaGo topped the Korean grandmaster Lee Sedol, becoming the first machine to beat a professional Go player--a feat that most AI researchers believed was still years away, given the extreme complexity of the ancient Eastern game. Now, AlphaGo is challenging Ke Jie, the current world number one, and according to Demis Hassabis, the CEO and founder of DeepMind, the machine is underpinned by a new and more powerful architecture suited to not just to Go but a wide range of real-world applications.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its ability to replace human jobs over the next few years has been the buzzword around the valley in the recent past. If research and number were to be taken as any parameter a recent study by Obama administration pointed out that almost half of the US jobs would be taken over by AI by 2036. To add insult to injury, certain studies have pointed out that close to 6% of US jobs will be replaced by AI as early 2021. Recent behaviour of the Indian ecosystem has definitely shown a trend of following valley technology. Whether this poses more as a bane than boon is something we will have to wait and watch, but in a country like India which is majorly human resource driven, taking pride on its educated work force and the world largest population in the working age group, the possibility of losing out major employability to AI could pose serious problems.

Dubai hopes to have a human-free police station by 2030

Is robot policing the way of the future? Dubai is well on its way to finding out. The emirate, one of seven in the UAE, is taking a technological leap of faith this week as it introduces its first robot officer to the Dubai police force. Designed by the Spanish company PAL Robotics, the specialized REEM robot stands 5 feet 6 inches high and looks like a knight in shining white plastic armor, riding in on its wheels (rather than a horse). This is just the first step for the Dubai police department. The department aims to have 25 percent of its police force composed of robot officers by the year 2030.


Nasa to launch emergency spacewalk after International Space Station computer breaks

Astronauts are having to climb into space to fix a computer in an emergency move. Two inhabitants of the International Space Station (ISS) will have to venture out on a spacewalk to repair a computer part – a data relay box – that broke over the weekend. The broken computer means that the lab is floating over the Earth relying only on its second computer, potentially putting the astronauts on board at risk.
