AlphaGo is at it again. Google DeepMind's Go-playing AI has defeated Ke Jie, the world's number one player, in the first of three games played in Wuzhen, China. The AI won by just half a point – the smallest possible margin of victory – in a match that lasted four hours and fifteen minutes. Though the scoreline looks close, AlphaGo was in the lead from relatively early on in the game. Since the AI favours moves that are more likely to guarantee victory, it doesn't usually trounce its opponents. In March last year, AlphaGo beat Lee Sedol, one of the world's top Go players, winning four out of five matches.

If RoboCop has a gun in his thigh, this robotic security car from Singapore has a drone that it can send after intruders. Singaporean startup Otsaw Digital has created a 176-pound golf-cart-sized automated vehicle called O-R3 that companies can use for security. It has 3D LIDAR sensors and GPS, along with other instruments that it uses to spot unattended bags and to differentiate between employees and intruders. If it spots a bag that remains unattended for five minutes, for instance, it raises an alarm and marks it for further investigation in case it's something dangerous. It can differentiate the people security personnel mark as employees from unknown individuals.

Hong Kong police on Tuesday arrested 21 Uber drivers for illegal car-hiring as part of a clamp down against Uber's operations in the Asian financial city. The arrests marked the latest upset for the San Francisco-based technology company, which in March said it would help five convicted Uber drivers to appeal their court case in Hong Kong. Police said they began an undercover operation in May and on Tuesday arrested 20 men and one woman between the ages of 21 and 59 for illegally driving a car for hire and driving without third-party risk insurance. "I would like to stress that our law enforcement action is ongoing and we do not rule out further arrests," said Lau Tat-fai, a chief inspector of police in the Kowloon West district. "We would like to say to the operator of the mobile phone application, as a responsible organization, you need to ensure cars for hire are equipped with a permit as required by Hong Kong laws. This is a basic responsibility to passengers and (shows) respect for Hong Kong laws," Mr Lau said.

A large body of water separated the present-day North American continent into two halves during most of the late Cretaceous Period, between 95 and 66 million years ago, and because of the seaway linking the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, land animals on one side could not make it to the other, and would therefore evolve independently. One such genus of animals, trapped on the western half, was the horned dinosaur, whose remains have been found in western North America, as well as Asia. However, the discovery of a tooth in Mississippi provides evidence that horned dinosaurs were present in eastern North America as well. The fossil, dated to between 66 and 68 million years ago, is from a dinosaur closely related to Triceratops, the most well-known genus of horned dinosaurs. The find also suggests that there could have existed some land connection between the two land masses thought to be completely separate at the time. This is a tooth of a ceratopsid horned dinosaur from Mississippi.

Twenty years later, we are on the threshold of the accomplishing the biggest feat in machine intelligence, a team of fully autonomous humanoids beating human players at FIFA World Cup soccer. Many of the advances that have led to the influx of modern autonomous vehicles and machine intelligence are the result of decades of competitions. While Deep Blue and AlphaGo have beat the world's best players at board games, soccer requires real-world complexities (see chart) in order to best humans on the field.
