Autonomous robot security guard has a built-in drone to stop intruders
A Singapore startup has released a four-wheeled security robot that has its own built-in drone. The O-R3, an autonomous robot created by Otsaw Digital, has a drone that can be launched after intruders. Otsaw's drone-in-robot design extends the range of a typical ground-based autonomous robot by up to 100m (328 ft), allowing the O-R3 to do things typical security robots cannot achieve. "[If] you have obstacles on the ground, we can launch a drone that has an aerial view of where the intruder is hiding, maybe on the other side of the wall, on the fence, or the gate, stuff like that," said Ling Ting Ming, CEO of Otsaw Digital and its parent company ActiV Technology. Aside from its in-built drone, the O-R3 is also able to do things like recognize intruders, as well as suspicious objects like unattended bags.
Modeling The Intensity Function Of Point Process Via Recurrent Neural Networks

Event sequence, asynchronously generated with random timestamp, is ubiquitous among applications. The precise and arbitrary timestamp can carry important clues about the underlying dynamics, and has lent the event data fundamentally different from the time-series whereby series is indexed with fixed and equal time interval. One expressive mathematical tool for modeling event is point process. The intensity functions of many point processes involve two components: the background and the effect by the history. Due to its inherent spontaneousness, the background can be treated as a time series while the other need to handle the history events. In this paper, we model the background by a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) with its units aligned with time series indexes while the history effect is modeled by another RNN whose units are aligned with asynchronous events to capture the long-range dynamics. The whole model with event type and timestamp prediction output layers can be trained end-to-end. Our approach takes an RNN perspective to point process, and models its background and history effect. For utility, our method allows a black-box treatment for modeling the intensity which is often a pre-defined parametric form in point processes. Meanwhile end-to-end training opens the venue for reusing existing rich techniques in deep network for point process modeling. We apply our model to the predictive maintenance problem using a log dataset by more than 1000 ATMs from a global bank headquartered in North America.
Audio-replay attack detection countermeasures

This paper presents the Speech Technology Center (STC) replay attack detection systems proposed for Automatic Speaker Verification Spoofing and Countermeasures Challenge 2017. In this study we focused on comparison of different spoofing detection approaches. These were GMM based methods, high level features extraction with simple classifier and deep learning frameworks. Experiments performed on the development and evaluation parts of the challenge dataset demonstrated stable efficiency of deep learning approaches in case of changing acoustic conditions. At the same time SVM classifier with high level features provided a substantial input in the efficiency of the resulting STC systems according to the fusion systems results.
Whitening-Free Least-Squares Non-Gaussian Component Analysis

Non-Gaussian component analysis (NGCA) is an unsupervised linear dimension reduction method that extracts low-dimensional non-Gaussian "signals" from high-dimensional data contaminated with Gaussian noise. NGCA can be regarded as a generalization of projection pursuit (PP) and independent component analysis (ICA) to multidimensional and dependent non-Gaussian components. Indeed, seminal approaches to NGCA are based on PP and ICA. Recently, a novel NGCA approach called least-squares NGCA (LSNGCA) has been developed, which gives a solution analytically through least-squares estimation of logdensity gradients and eigendecomposition. However, since pre-whitening of data is involved in LSNGCA, it performs unreliably when the data covariance matrix is ill-conditioned, which is often the case in highdimensional data analysis. In this paper, we propose a whitening-free variant of LSNGCA and experimentally demonstrate its superiority.

Asiana Airlines Passenger Forced To Move From Seat Over Prosthetic Leg, Told 'You're Not Normal'
A San Francisco man aboard an Asiana Airlines flight claims he was discriminated against and forced to vacate his seat because of his prosthetic leg. During the confrontation, a flight attendant allegedly told the passenger, Tim Seward, that he's "not a normal person." Seward captured some of the exchange on video. Seward was traveling from China to South Korea Sunday and reportedly purchased a seat in the exit row near the front of the aircraft, according to NBC reported Monday. But he was soon asked to move by an airline agent, who was concerned that he would not be able to perform the same actions required of the seat as an able-bodied person.

Samsung has said the its Galaxy S8's iris scanning provides users with'airtight security', but researchers have demonstrated that it can be easily bypassed using a photograph and a contact lens. A new video has revealed that hackers can place a contact lens over a printed photo of the smartphone owner's eye to unlock the handset. Although Samsung has noted that'the patterns in your irises are unique to you and are virtually impossible to replicate' the makeshift eye is able to fool the technology - leaving many to wonder just how secure the technology really is.
