Humanitarian efforts could be aided by AI

Researchers have developed an AI algorithm to accurately predict the gender of pre-paid mobile phone users, which could be useful in crises. Phone tracking technology is already used to locate those in need of aid in humanitarian crises; but the latest development could help further, for example by identifying vulnerable groups such as women with potentially young children. Mobile phones are one of the fastest growing technologies in the developing world with global penetration rates reaching 90 per cent. However, the fact that most phones in developing countries are pre-paid means that the data lacks key information about the person carrying the phone, including gender and other demographic data, which could be useful in a crisis. Now, a team of researchers from the Data Science Institute and Department of Computing at Imperial College London have developed a machine learning algorithm, which is a form of AI.


AlphaGo beats Ke Jie again to wrap up three-part match

AlphaGo has again defeated Ke Jie, the world's number one Go player, in their second game, meaning the AI has secured victory in the three-part match. The win over Ke, universally considered the best Go player in the world, essentially confirms that AlphaGo has surpassed human Go ability a little over a year after the AI first beat Lee Se-dol. Ke played "perfectly" for about the first 50 moves, according to AlphaGo's analysis, and evolved his strategy to engage in a series of complex battles across the board. But AlphaGo handled the multi-angled assault well to simplify the engrossing game and eventually forced Ke to resign. "For the first 100 moves it was the closest we've ever seen anyone play against the Master version of AlphaGo," DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said in the post-game press conference.


Facebook could farm users' thoughts with mind-reading technology to sell adverts

How will driverless cars impact the insurance industry?

IFC invests $3M in AI-focused fund pi Ventures - ETtech

International Finance Corporation (IFC), the investment arm of the World Bank Group, is investing $3 million in pi Ventures' maiden fund. An early-stage investment firm, pi Ventures is focused on startups in the area of applied artificial intelligence, machine learning and internet of things (IoT). The amount will be used for investing in companies leveraging technologies such as applied artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and IoT across a range of sectors. "Getting IFC to back us in our journey is very meaningful to us," said Manish Singhal, founding partner of pi Ventures. "Not only do they bring a wealth of knowledge but also a worldwide network, which can be very useful for our investee companies." It has backed four projects so far -medical diagnostic startup SigTuple, heart monitoring startup ten3T Health (Cicer), energy management firm Zenatix and health analytics startup Niramai.

In the post-game press conference, Hassabis, who was a child chess prodigy, said: "For the first 100 moves, it was the closest we've ever seen anyone play against the Master version of AlphaGo." "Ke Jie pushed AlphaGo right to the limit," Hassabis added on Twitter. After narrowly losing the first match, a visibly shaken Ke had described AlphaGo's latest version as "godlike". This time, he was more relaxed: "Today's game was different from the first. AlphaGo made some moves which were opposite from my vision of how to maximise the possibility of winning. I also thought I was very close to winning the game in the middle but maybe that's not what AlphaGo was thinking. I'm a little bit sad, it's a bit of a regret because I think I played pretty well."

Buddhist temples in Japan are offering robotic classes to foster interest in future generations in Buddhist culture and temples. As well as offering traditional activities--such as tea ceremonies, lectures, reading and crafting--temples in Japan have started working with the robot academies franchise Robo Done to increase their educational offerings and teach robotics to kids, ages 6 years and up. These activities have been a great hit, drawing numerous kids and their parents to the temples. As a result, the number of temples that are offering robotic classes is increasing exponentially.
