How do you deliver machine learning in a large company?

With more than 40% market share in mobile games, billion monthly active users and 2.6 billion unique devices, Unity plays a profoundly important role in the booming gaming and VR markets. Introducing machine learning and AI into game development will curb one of the greatest expenses in time and money that go into content creation, but will also change the role of programmers. With immense access to data and computing power, developers will use historical data to model extensive virtual realities of games, taking programming out of the equation. I spoke with Dr Danny Lange, VP of AI and machine learning at Unity about this, the present and future of game development, machine learning, and how developers and startups can get most out of it. IBM are not doing "cognitive computing" no matter how many times they say they are. I was chatting with an old friend recently and he reminded me of a conversation we had nearly 50 years ago. I tried to explain to him what I did for living and he was trying to understand why getting computers to understand was more complicated than key word analysis. I explained about concepts underlying sentences and explained that sentences used words but that people really didn't use words in their minds except to get to the underlying ideas and that computers were having a hard time with that. Fifty years later, key words are still dominating the thoughts of people who try to get computers to deal with language.

Learning to read and wires rewires the brain in just six months, according to new research. A study of women in India who learned to read in their 30s has shown the human brain's incredible capacity to reorganise and transform itself, researchers said. Researchers recruited women in India, a country with an illiteracy rate of around 39 per cent, to see what they could learn about the areas of the brain devoted to reading. Learning to read and wires rewires the brain in just six months, according to new research. Given these rapid advancements, the tech firm is now looking to apply AI to a range of fields. Image recognition, for instance, can be used for diagnosing medical conditions, said Lily Peng, a trained doctor leading the tech firm's efforts in finding health applications. Such technology can help physicians cut down the "time crunching through data," Peng told CNBC. Then doctors can spend far more time "taking care of the patients โ€ฆ [and] understanding what they want to tailor the best treatment for them." When it comes to finance, HSBC has even taken on Google services to fight money laundering and better calculate risk, said Jia Li, head of R&D for machine learning and artificial intelligence at Google.

This is the face of desperation. Ke Jie, the world's best human Go player, lost two games against a new version of Google's AlphaGo on May 25. This means AlphaGo has already secured victory in the three-part match. The third game will take place Saturday (May 27), during the ongoing "Future of Go" summit in Wuzhen, China, where the game was born. The 19-year old Chinese player looked exasperated during his second match against Google's artificial intelligence player.

A disembodied voice sounded over a loudspeaker. Take cover," it warned to anyone within earshot. Then, the sirens began to wail. Erin Delaney assumed it was a drill. She peeked down the hallway to see how other people were responding. Then she hit the deck. The NATO base in Kabul where Delaney had been working for weeks was being attacked. Delaney, 24, had never had any military training. She grew up in San Diego, traveled up the coast for college at UC Berkeley, and spent the next two years nestled in the safe, Tesla-filled San Francisco bubble, working in the compliance department at Dropbox. Now, with her nose to the ground, she was getting a taste--however brief--of life in a war zone. She flipped over the visitor's badge she'd received when she first arrived at the base. In case of attack, it said, she should stay on the ground for two minutes. Assuming nothing dire happened, she was to shelter in place until the shelling stopped. So, for about an hour, that's what she did.
