Self-driving has had many takers despite not being a mainstream technology yet. The newest player on the scene is the Russian tech giant Yandex, which showcased its self-driving car Tuesday. In the press release, the company detailed its plans to launch a self-driven taxi service. It stated that it plans to use driverless technologies for application across a wide range of industries. While self-driving technology was being developed mostly in the U.S., tech companies from other parts of the world have also shown interest in it.

On Wednesday, May 24, Dubai will launch a new police robot that marks the first phase of the integration of robots into the police force. This modified version of the REEM robot (Designed by PAL robotics and unveiled in 2011) is capable of feeding video to a command center, forwarding reported crimes to police, settling fines, facial recognition, and speaking nine languages. It will operate at most malls and tourist attractions.

When future robots enter the world, they won't have a learning curve. Artificial intelligence researchers are creating tools to help teach the robots that will assemble our gadgets in factories, or do chores around our home, before they ever step (or roll) into the real world. These simulators, most recently announced by Nvidia as a project called Isaac's Lab but also pioneered by Alphabet's DeepMind and Elon Musk's OpenAI, are 3D spaces that have physics just like reality, with virtual objects that act the same way as their physical counterparts. Virtual spaces are required because one way of teaching robots is a method called reinforcement learning, or the chore of doing one task over and over again until it's done correctly. In a simulation, training the bots can be done more quickly and cheaply than in real life because lots of simulated robots can learn at once.

Kakao Corp (CEO: Ji Hoon Yim) announced on May 23rd that it will begin large-scale recruiting events as part of Kakao's effort to strengthen its AI business. Kakao established a new AI department earlier this year to formally prepare for its AI business and has stepped up to attract talents, especially those who have advanced degrees (masters and PhDs) in related fields. Large-scale recruitment from a specific area has not been executed since its merger with Daum in October 2014. Recruitment will be carried out in a rolling basis in seven different areas: Search modeling, search statistical analysis, multimedia processing, voice processing, natural language processing, recommendation technology, and recommendation data application. Anyone with Masters degrees or higher who is equipped with professional knowledge in the abovementioned fields are eligible to apply, regardless of their majors.

AlphaGo is supposed to maximize its chances of winning, rather than maximize the margin of its victory, according to DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis. "AlphaGo always tries to maximize its probability of winning, rather than try to maximize the size of the winning margin," he said during a post-match press conference.

Three Kodi repositories and add-ons have been shut down after being targeted by an anti-piracy group in Israel, it's been reported.
