Global banks that have a large mortgage business are facing pressure internally and externally to upgrade their operating model to save money, decrease processing times and enhance the customer experience – today it can take more than 60 days to complete a mortgage transaction. The pressure is particularly strong with FinTechs like US online lender Rocket Mortgage and UK digital mortgage broker Trussle creating a completely digital experience for prospective home buyers. Banks, therefore, are exploring everything from mature technologies like Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to more leading edge and high-tech solutions based on blockchain and artificial intelligence. While some of these solutions could dramatically impact day-to-day business for lenders and their brokers and customers, blockchain has the potential to completely transform the entire mortgage financing industry. New Video: 'Lego Batman' has comic zing -- and plenty of action
It's not as delightfully inventive or surprisingly philosophical as "The Lego Movie," but the Batman-themed spinoff is every bit as funny and a lot more action-packed. "The Lego Batman Movie" gets some added zing from a cast of characters that includes not just the "Bat family" of Robin (Michael Cera) and Batgirl (Rosario Dawson) but also the Justice League, a fair number of DC villains and -- just for the heck of it -- King Kong, Sauron and Lord Voldemort. So far, this is the most "anything can happen" comedy of 2017. "Kill Switch" (available June 16) Dan Stevens continues his evolution from "Downton Abbey" hunk into science-fiction/fantasy star here, where he plays an ex-NASA pilot who takes a job with a private company exploring a mirror Earth. The film's big gimmick is the whenever the hero is in the world known as "The Echo," the perspective shifts to first-person, replicating the feel of a video game.
Open Source and the Artificial Intelligence Frontier
The open source arena continues to rapidly converge with the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Not only are technology industry titans contributing meaningful tools to the community, but international players and billionaires are making contributions. Meanwhile, some of our smartest people are also laser-focused on keeping AI development open and safe. Interest from China in AI has been ramping up quickly, and Chinese social media and gaming titan Tencent Holdings has just announced that it is opening an AI research center in Seattle, to be headed up by former Microsoft scientist Yu Dong. Reuters cites Tencent, which owns the WeChat messaging app, as Asia's most valuable company with a market capitalization of almost $300 billion.
Japan to operate self-navigating cargo ships soon
The plan to have so-called "smart ships" moving around the world is being driven by a consortium of Japanese shipping companies who are working with shipbuilders to develop self-piloting cargo ships. At the heart of the ships will be a form of artificial intelligence. Self-learning computer software will function autonomously to pilot what the BBC describe as "the safest, shortest, most fuel-efficient routes." The idea is to reduce costs and to improve efficiency. In addition the artificial intelligence will be able to predict malfunctions and to anticipate other problems.

If you have ever been on a ship, you might have realized navigation is the most technical and the most important part of sailing -- a slight error in calculation might literally sink you. And such errors, in the past, have been caused mostly by humans. Japan has found a unique solution to the problem -- self-navigating ships. These "smart ships" will find the safest, shortest and most fuel-efficient routes using artificial intelligence (AI) and could be put into service by 2025. The AI tech is expected to make shipping safer by not just potting the course, but also detecting machinery malfunctions and other problems way in advance.
Exploring LSTMs
The first time I learned about LSTMs, my eyes glazed over. It turns out LSTMs are a fairly simple extension to neural networks, and they're behind a lot of the amazing achievements deep learning has made in the past few years. So I'll try to present them as intuitively as possible – in such a way that you could have discovered them yourself. Imagine we have a sequence of images from a movie, and we want to label each image with an activity (is this a fight?, are the characters talking?, are the characters eating?). One way is to ignore the sequential nature of the images, and build a per-image classifier that considers each image in isolation.
Artificial Intelligence Will Put Spies Out of Work, Too
If Robert Cardillo has his way, robots will perform 75 percent of the tasks currently done by American intelligence analysts who collect, analyze, and interpret images beamed from drones, satellites, and other feeds around the globe. Cardillo, the director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, known by the acronym NGA, announced his push toward "automation" and artificial intelligence at a conference this week in San Antonio. The annual conference, hosted by the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation, brings together technologists, soldiers, and intelligence professionals to discuss national security threats, changes in technology, and data collection and processing. Artificial intelligence is on the rise; former President Barack Obama's White House released a white paper on its potential future impacts in the final months of the administration. Police officers are using preliminary programs to predict the likelihood someone will commit a crime in a specific neighborhood based on crime statistics data.

An article published by Giving Thought, the charity think tank of the Charities Aid Foundation, explores how artificial intelligence (AI) could lead to the development of effective, low-cost philanthropy advice, drive greater amounts of giving and help people to give more effectively. The piece, written by Giving Thought Programme Leader Rhodri Davies, sets out how AI could reduce the cost of philanthropy advice, help people choose how to give, what they want to achieve and identify where need is greatest and which causes might maximise social outcomes and donor satisfaction. It concludes that while artificial intelligence presents many challenges and opportunities for philanthropy, one of the most likely impacts will be to make philanthropy advice a mass market-commodity easily available to the wider public, rather than just the preserve of wealthier philanthropists.
