Recently, Bengaluru-based AIndra, an artificial intelligence-based cervical cancer screening startup, reached out to her. Its proposition was simple-- apply AI to screen and identify samples. Only those samples indicating a risk of cancer would be sent to the experts for further examination. "My first thought was, 'you are going to replace me, your algorithm will say if cancer is present or not.'

Japanese team develops snake-like robot to help in disasters

SENDAI โ€“ A research team says it has developed a snake-like robot that can climb over debris and rubble by shooting a jet of air to lift its front end from the ground. It is the first snake-shaped robot in the world that can move with its front tip off the ground, according to the team, which includes members from Tohoku University in Sendai. The Tohoku region was devastated by the March 11, 2011, Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. The robot will provide important capabilities during search and rescue operations because it can enter a collapsed building and look for people trapped inside with the camera mounted on its front tip, the team said. After working to improve durability, the team aims to put the device to practical use in three years. The plastic robot is 8 meters long and weighs around 3 kg.

Japan to launch a fleet of self-navigating cargo ships

Waymo is hoping to expand its vehicle automation efforts to delivery trucks in a challenge to similar plans by rival firm Uber. The self-driving car unit of Google parent Alphabet is gambling that autonomous vehicles will take over long distance haulage in the coming years. Waymo is testing a single Peterbilt truck at its private track in California, as well as conducting manual testing on public roads, to collect data. Uber previously announced it was working on autonomous trucking through its Otto unit, which it acquired last year. Otto is aiming to equip trucks with software, sensors, lasers and cameras so they eventually will be able to navigate the more than 220,000 miles of US highways on their own, while a human driver naps in the back of the cab or handles other tasks.

This new project is reminiscent of Hieroglyph, a project from Arizona State University that is similarly aimed at leveraging science fiction to make positive change in the real world. Like the Hieroglyph project, the Science Fiction Advisory Council will be launching with a short story collection. In July, XPRIZE plans to publish an online anthology of original science-fiction stories by members of the advisory council recounting the experiences of passengers on a fictional flight from Tokyo to San Francisco who are mysteriously transported 20 years into the future. The stories, published at Seat14C.com, will presumably include visions of some of the "preferred future states" that XPRIZE seeks to identify, and will be followed by quarterly meetings of the advisers as they build out their roadmaps for avoiding dystopia and reaching those better futures.

It is unclear if Masayoshi Son, Chairman of Softbank, was one of the 17 million YouTube viewers of Boston Dynamic's Big Dog before acquiring the company for an undisclosed amount this past Thursday. What is clear is the acquisition of Boston Dynamics by Softbank is a big deal. Softbank's humanoid robot Pepper is trading up her dainty wheels for a pair of sturdy legs. In expressing his excitement for the acquisition, Masayoshi Son said, "Today, there are many issues we still cannot solve by ourselves with human capabilities.
