Nintendo announces new titles for the Switch console
The latest Nintendo console has proved a firm favourite with fans, but a raft of new games will help to keep their excitement alive. The Japanese firm announced the return of some iconic franchises, as well as some new blood, at the E3 expo being held this week. Among the coming attractions will be at least five big titles that have helped to build Nintendo's reputation as one of the godfathers of gaming. Fish recognise friends and foes through their unique faces
A little striped fish that lives among rocks in Lake Tanganyika in East Africa has the unexpected ability to recognise individual faces, which it uses to keep menacing strangers in sight. The cichlid (Julidochromis transcriptus) identifies unfamiliar individuals by looking at the pattern around their eyes rather than at other body parts such as their fins or trunk, researchers have discovered. While facial recognition has been tested in some mammals, including apes, and in birds, animals such as fish or wasps were erroneously thought to have brains too simple for the task. After recent research showed that aquarium fish can be thought to identify the faces of their human owners, the Tanganyikan cichlid has now demonstrated how facial recognition is used in the wild. Because the fish lives in rock crevices hidden by vegetation on the lakebed, only a small part of its body tends to be visible at any given time.

A massive Japanese conglomerate is scooping up Boston Dynamics, the robotics firm behind many of the videos you may have seen online of amazing yet somewhat creepy automatons. On Friday, SoftBank said it had struck a deal to acquire Boston Dynamics from Alphabet, the parent company of Google, which had bought the robotics company in 2013 but decided last year to put it up for sale. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. "Boston Dynamics are the clear technology leaders in advanced dynamic robots," SoftBank chief executive Masayoshi Son said in a statement. "I am thrilled to welcome them to the SoftBank family and look forward to supporting them as they continue to advance the field of robotics."

Microsoft pulled out all the stops this week -- flashing lights, pounding music, fake smoke -- to debut its new $500 game console, aimed at the kind of hard-core gamer who appreciates a good glamour shot of a microprocessor. But how many will actually buy it? That's the question looming around Microsoft's launch, as the technology giant touts its most powerful console ever to an audience that increasingly is becoming more casual. Mobile games now make up 42 percent of the game industry's revenue worldwide, according to a report from game industry analysis firm Newzoo. It is expected to pass the 50 percent mark by 2020.
This New Atari-Playing AI Wants to Dethrone DeepMind
Artificial intelligence is not a contact sport. Currently, algorithms mostly just compete to win old Atari games, or accomplish historic board gaming feats like pwning five human Go champions at once. These are just practice rounds, though, for the way more complicated (and practical) goal of teaching robots how to navigate human environments. Vicarious, an AI company, has developed a new AI that is absolutely slammin' at Breakout, the paddle vs. brick arcade classic. Its AI, called Schema Networks, even succeeds at tweaked versions of the game--for instance, when the paddle is moved closer to the bricks.

It was not long ago that Artificial Intelligence (AI) was only in the realm of science fiction. Today, it has become a reality and is only growing more prominent in many different industries every day. This includes the internet as AI in search engine technology has been around for a few years. The algorithms used to rank pages have been affected considerably by AI already and that trend will continue into the foreseeable future. Currently, Google's RankBrain, an AI process used help set search engine rankings, is having a major impact which is only expected to expand.
RoboCup video series: Industrial league
RoboCup is an international scientific initiative with the goal to advance the state of the art of intelligent robots. Established in 1997, the original mission was to field a team of robots capable of winning against the human soccer World Cup champions by 2050. To celebrate 20 years of RoboCup, the Federation is launching a video series featuring each of the leagues with one short video for those who just want a taster, and one long video for the full story. Robohub will be featuring one league every week leading up to RoboCup 2017 in Nagoya, Japan. This week, we consider being part of the RoboCupIndustrial league.
Google Cloud: Build your own machine learning-powered robot arm using TensorFlow and Google Cloud
Specifically, you can tell the robot what flavor you like, such as "chewy candy," "sweet chocolate" or "hard mint." The robot then processes your instructions via voice recognition and natural language processing, recommends a particular kind of candy and uses image recognition to recognize and select that recommendation. The entire demo is powered by deep-learning technology running on Cloud Machine Learning Engine (the fully-managed TensorFlow runtime from Google Cloud) and Cloud machine learning APIs. This demo is intended to serve as a microcosm of a real-world machine learning (ML) solution. For example, Kewpie, a major food manufacturer in Japan, used the same Google Cloud technology to build a successful Proof of Concept (PoC) for doing anomaly detection for diced potato in a factory.
