An Australian startup revealed its flagship product, an earpiece that can interpret 8 different languages in real-time, at a United Nations event in Switzerland on Friday. Lingmo International, a startup based in West Gosford north of Sydney, launched its TranslateOne2One earpiece at the UN's Artificial Intelligence for Good Summit in Geneva, revealing that IBM Watson machine learning technology had been used for its algorithms. Traditionally, converting one language to another orally in real-time is called "interpreting" whereas the term "translation" is reserved for processing text across languages with some delay. Lingmo founder Danny May, however, describes his product as performing "translation in real-time". And what I mean by independent is that it doesn't require any connectivity to your phone by Bluetooth or wi-fi.

The US military will have more robot soldiers on the battlefield than real ones by 2025, a top British intelligence expert has claimed. John Bassett, a security consultant with a 20-year career at GCHQ, believes deadly combat robots are rapidly becoming "a reality" of modern day warfare. These state-of-the art military units will consist of human soldiers and robots and are aimed at maximizing performance on future battlefields. Combat robots will rapidly become an inherent part of US fighting forces within the next 10-15 years, defense experts say. Washington is apparently seeking to gain military edge over China, Russia and other rivals investing in research and development of robotic systems.

In Shanghai, a prototype of a new 24-hour convenience store has no staff, no registers, and the whole thing is on wheels, designed to eventually drive itself to a warehouse to restock, or to a customer to make a delivery. The startup behind it believes that it's the model for the grocery store of the future–and because it's both mobile and far cheaper to build and operate than a typical store, it could also help bring better access to groceries to food deserts and rural areas. In a dense urban neighborhood with high rents, the low-cost system could make it possible for a group of neighbors to launch their own local grocery. "The biggest costs to have a store are the place itself to rent in a central city–it's ultra-expensive–and then staff is really expensive, and we're removing both of these at the same time," says Tomas Mazetti, one of the founders of Wheelys, the Sweden-based startup that is developing the store along with China's Hefei University and Himalayafy, an offshoot of Wheelys focused on the technology inside the store. Wheelys already makes small mobile coffee carts designed to help young entrepreneurs compete with chains like Starbucks when they don't have the funds to rent space for a standard cafe.

Conviva nabs $40M for AI-based video analytics, now valued around $300M
As more video providers finding audiences directly through apps and the web -- and away from pay-TV-based packages -- we're seeing the emergence of more analytics to measure how those videos are delivered, and who is watching them. Conviva, a company that has developed a set machine-learning-based algorithms to do just that, today announced that it has raised $40 million from strategic, new and existing investors to continue building out its platform and business. Investors include Australia's sovereign wealth fund Future Fund, NEA, Foundation Capital, and Time Warner Investments. The company is not disclosing its valuation, but a source close to the company confirms that it is around $300 million. Conviva has raised $121 million to date. If you've had your eye on the streaming video industry for a while, you'll know that Conviva is not exactly a spring chicken.
