Giant tech companies, like Google, Apple, and Amazon, believe that the next economic wave will be driven by artificial intelligence. Because of this, they have spent billions of dollars into research and development for the advancement of AI, a move that will place artificial intelligence in control of almost every sector of the society. Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, IBM, and Facebook along with China's Baidu and Alibaba have spent a total of $58.2 billion in research and development. That price is more than what any of some developed countries are spending on the same activity. For example the UK only spent $53.5 billion on research and development while Russia spent $47.6 billion.
Time Series Analysis with Generalized Additive Models
Whenever you spot a trend plotted against time, you would be looking at a time series. The de facto choice for studying financial market performance and weather forecasts, time series are one of the most pervasive analysis techniques because of its inextricable relation to time--we are always interested to foretell the future. One intuitive way to make forecasts would be to refer to recent time points. Today's stock prices would likely be more similar to yesterday's prices than those from five years ago. Hence, we would give more weight to recent than to older prices in predicting today's price. These correlations between past and present values demonstrate temporal dependence, which forms the basis of a popular time series analysis technique called ARIMA (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average).
Queen's Speech: Government to announce plans for commercial space flights and ports for spaceships
Powers planned by the Government aiming to pave the way for commercial space flights in Britain will be included in the Queen's Speech alongside a raft of investments in transport infrastructure. The legislation, according to Department for Transport (DfT), will allow the launch of satellites from the UK for the first time, horizontal flights to the edge of space for scientific experiments and the establishment of spaceports in regions across Britain. The Queen's Speech, which has been delayed by two days due to the current instability in British politics, will also include measures to improve conditions for the 100,000 drivers of plug-in vehicles by "removing barriers that are preventing more drivers switching to electric". "As things stand, those wanting to use publicly-accessible charging points may need to register with several different companies that run them," the Department for Transport added. "The planned legislation will include measures to ensure drivers need register only once to make full use of the existing infrastructure."
The fastest-growing area of machine learning science
First, Text Analysis and Natural Language Processing make up the largest cluster in the network. Scientific papers here point to advances in machine learning through pattern recognition in language, leading to everything from faster crime analysis to more efficient assessments of clinical narratives. While much of the network is related to health and medicine, the fourth-largest cluster is focused on environmental topics; here, machine learning helps predict how climate shifts affect, say, small mammals in Alaska or plant species in Peninsular Thailand. The Artificial Neural Networks cluster, on the upper left, seems to have a foot in both worlds: a significant number of papers on neural networks deal with human health, while others deal with the health of lakes or forests.
Sony taps crowdfunding to deliver its kid-friendly coding kit
Sony's answer to Lego Mindstorms is a robot-building kit called Koov. It's the first product from Sony's Global Education division, and it's meant to help kids learn to code while they have fun building robots. The company has put the design kit on Indiegogo to gather some $100,000 in crowd-sourced funding while getting valuable feedback on the kits, which include more than 30 hours of kid-friendly coding instruction and multi-colored blocks with sensors and actuators. The project currently sits at almost $5,000 in funding; kits are set to ship out to backers in November. Like Lego's Mindstorms and WeDo, the Koov project aims to help kids develop "21st Century Skills" like creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum areas.

With growing consumer consciousness and stricter regulations putting pressure on companies to clean up their act, one company has devised a machine learning system it says will sift through data and locate forced labor in the manufacturing process. SAP Ariba, a for-profit software and IT company based in California, works with millions of large and small-scale companies to streamline their supply chain, the system through which their products are sourced, made or delivered. It works with companies that deal with fashion and food, but also technology. "The fact that every country in the world has made forced labor illegal, the acknowledgement alone has made companies realize they cannot take this lightly," said Padmini Ranganathan, the vice president of products and innovation at Ariba.
