Mark Zuckerberg says he wants Facebook users to start playing a similar role to pastors in churches. He recently announced a new mission for the social network, which is set to focus on growing groups and communities to "bring the world closer together". He believes the site can be used to unite what he sees as a "divided" society, and make users feel like they are "part of something bigger". The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. SAN FRANCISCO -- The most significant update to the iPhone in three years promises not only to upend the smartphone market but Apple's financial results for several quarters. On the heels of the iPhone's 10th anniversary this week, and before Apple unveils its expected new models in September, analysts expect flat year-over-year iPhone sales as consumers wait for the revamped phones. After that, however, they expect record-setting sales, dwarfing the success of the wildly popular iPhone 6. Angelo Zino, a senior equity analyst at CFRA, predicts record iPhone shipments of 241.5 million in the 12 months following the iPhone 8 launch -- smashing the previous high, set by iPhone 6, following its introduction in late 2014.
Having a smartphone in reach reduces brainpower even when switched off, finds report
The mere presence of a smartphone reduces cognitive capacity, adversely affecting the brain's ability to hold and process data at any given time, according to a new study. Having a smartphone within reach, even if it's switched off or placed face-down, causes "brain drain", say researchers from McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas. They also found that the more reliant people are on their smartphones, the more they seem to suffer from their presence. iOS 11 beta: Should you download Apple's new software for iPhone and iPad?
Apple has released its iOS 11 beta to the public. That means everyone can get hold of the new software, months before it's released – but there's a big catch. Because the iPhone and iPad operating system isn't actually finished yet, it's full of plenty of bugs as well as not being as refined as it will be when it's officially unveiled. That means that using it comes with a huge warning: it might stop working properly at any time, and you can't really complain about it if it does. With that out of the way, it's worth getting to what iOS 11 does actually give you.

The last 30 or so years in scholarly communications have been marked by a steady trend towards digital content creation and delivery; particularly for journals, the industry has now moved from print to online. However, online delivery may mask underlying print-based attitudes, as is evidenced from the continuing preference academics have for reading PDF rather than any other format. In this regard, the advent of machine learning, because it involves a semantic engagement with the content, may in the end be more far-reaching, in fact genuinely disruptive, as it looks to challenge existing business processes. Here, for the first time, is a tool that can identify the meaning contained within articles. Machine learning will have an impact throughout the publishing lifecycle, from discovery (the most obvious quick win) to authoring, classification and presentation.

The problem is that robots that are good at one mode of transportation are usually bad at another. Airborne drones are fast and agile, but generally have too limited of a battery life to travel for long distances. Ground vehicles, on the other hand, are more energy efficient, but slower and less mobile. Researchers from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) are aiming to develop robots that can both maneuver around on land and take to the skies. In a new paper, the team presented a system of eight quadcopter drones that can fly and drive through a city-like setting with parking spots, no-fly zones, and landing pads.

Neural networks, machine-learning systems, predictive analytics, speech recognition, natural-language understanding and other components of what's broadly defined as'artificial intelligence' (AI) are currently undergoing a boom: research is progressing apace, media attention is at an all-time high, and organisations are increasingly implementing AI solutions in pursuit of automation-driven efficiencies. The first thing to establish is what we're not talking about, which is human-level AI -- often termed'strong AI' or'artificial general intelligence' (AGI). A survey conducted among four groups of experts in 2012/13 by AI researchers Vincent C. Müller and Nick Bostrom reported a 50 percent chance that AGI would be developed between 2040 and 2050, rising to 90 percent by 2075; so-called'superintelligence' -- which Bostrom defines as "any intellect that greatly exceeds the cognitive performance of humans in virtually all domains of interest" -- was expected some 30 years after the achievement of AGI (Fundamental Issues of Artificial Intelligence, Chapter 33). This stuff will happen, and it certainly needs careful consideration, but it's not happening right now. What is happening right now, at an increasing pace, is the application of AI algorithms to all manner of processes that can significantly affect peoples' lives -- at work, at home and as they travel around. Although hype around these technologies is approaching the'peak of expectation' (sensu Gartner), there's a potential fly in the AI ointment: the workings of many of these algorithms are not open to scrutiny -- either because they are the proprietary assets of an organisation or because they are opaque by their very nature.

Nasa speaks out over 'Anonymous' video claiming it is about to reveal aliens
Nasa isn't about to announce it has made contact with aliens, despite a hugely viral video, the agency has confirmed. The video – posted on an account associated with the hacking collective Anonymous – had claimed that Nasa was "on the verge" of making a new announcement on the discovery of alien life. The long and sometimes rambling footage used a range of evidence to suggest that the agency had discovered something that it would be making public soon. But Nasa has now confirmed that, as thought, there's no new evidence of life on Earth. At least according to senior scientist Thomas Zurbuchen, upon whose comments much of the video was based.
